PHILIP WOKE UP WITH a feeling like he was dying. Casey was sound asleep next to him, and Philip checked the time. It was just past midnight. Why was he feeling this? His heart was hammering, his skin clammy and every part of him wanted to leave the bed and-
âRaylan!â he whispered. His breath was coming too quickly, and he shook Casey. âCasey! Wake up!â
âWhat?â Casey sounded groggy as he sat up, rubbing his eyes.
Philipâs vision was blurring, and he couldnât catch a breath. Everything was distant and yet too close. He tried to focus, but it was impossible. Caseyâs voice calling his name sounded like it was coming from far away. Philip was drowning and there was nothing there but a nameless panic and dread.
âPhilip!â A hand was on his back, his hand on someoneâs chest, against their wildly beating heart. âBreathe!â The voice commanded. Philipâs fingers curled around the warmth of the flesh, the steady rise and fall of their breathing, and he heaved in a lungful of air.
âCasey.â He buried a tear-stained face in Caseyâs chest. When did he cry? When was the last time he cried? âI think Raylanâs in danger.â His voice shook, and he was barely able to get the words out.
âDanger how?â Casey asked, his voice quiet.
âI think heâs dying.â The words almost got stuck in his throat. He was shaking again, his breath coming out in ragged gasps. âI canât⦠Casey⦠I need to go to him!â
It was a primal urge, no reason or logic. Even as a part of him acknowledged that this was nothing like him, that part had no say against the panic bubbling up inside him, against the dread that pooled in his belly.
âGet dressed,â Casey said, releasing him, voice brisk and steady. âWeâll go.â
Philip dressed more quickly than he ever had in his life; everything felt like a daze. When he turned, Casey was dressed and waiting for him, his face shadowed, and all Philip could see was the sharp angles of his cheeks.
âYouâll have to open a portal,â Casey said, his voice neutral, but calm. âI donât know where he is.â
Philip didnât either, but his magic apparently did, because he opened the portal on to a darkened bedroom with a still figure on the floor and another one twitching and whimpering.
âRaylan!â Philip was at his side in a flash, kneeling down and touching him, something deep within him settling at the contact.
Casey was examining the other man. He joined Philip, saying. âHe may need medical attention. Iâm going to find someone.â
He opened the door and nearly bumped into a woman who was coming in. They stopped, staring at each other. Philip had risen with Raylan cradled in his arms.
âCan you help him?â he asked.
She looked from him to Casey and to Raylan and the dead man on the floor, her eyes wide and mouth open.
âWell?â Casey asked, sounding impatient.
She nodded. âI can try. Iâm a doctor, but Iâm not sure what happened here.â
âIâm assuming that man
