Theo

Not all of the war council members had accompanied them on this trip. The elder merfolk had stayed behind, trusting their younger counterparts, the general, and their queen to make the decisions as they moved.

If anyone had asked him a few weeks ago if he, too, trusted Isla’s judgement, Theo would have told them that only a fool would do so. Now he wasn’t so sure.

Isla was… interesting, to say the least. While her actions often confounded him, he could see how hard she worked to make her people happy and to be strong for them, even to her own detriment. He didn’t think anyone had any idea of the lengths she went to for her people, not even her friends. He’d been watching her closely throughout this trip, and no one else seemed to notice how her shoulders dropped from exhaustion whenever someone turned their back to her or that her cheerful smile wavered often or how her hands shook at her sides after each extraordinary display of power.

He was begrudgingly impressed with her but also thoroughly irritated. While she would be an obvious asset in battle with her fearsome skill with a blade, her own overextension of herself could make her a liability at some point. Realistically, she couldn’t keep up the pace she was moving at, but that didn’t seem to occur to her. It was beyond frustrating to see someone so clever act so stupid.

And it was this reason that he was now glaring at her from across the makeshift table the council had fashioned for themselves before their meeting had begun. Usually, his ire was at her attitude, her arrogance, or her overly friendly relationship with Alistair. But not this time. No, now, his irritation was aimed at the dark circles under her eyes that she and her friends ignored. The weight she has lost in recent weeks. The lack of self preservation she presented. All of it made him want to scream or shake her.

And the fact that he cared so much just pissed him off more.

He let out a slow breath from his nose, stirring the water in front of him gently. He had to focus. There were much more important things for him to worry about than a queen who didn’t know how to rule without destroying herself in the process.

Forcing Isla to the back of his mind—since he was pretty sure he couldn’t push her out completely—he tuned into the argument occurring between one of the war council members (whose name Theo could never remember) and General Alistair.

“I’m telling you,” Alistair gritted out, “going straight for the king is a death wish. We can’t just attack them head on like that. We have no idea what’s waiting for us there.”

“But we have the element of surprise! Those sorry excuses for merfolk won’t know what hit them!”

“I wouldn’t go that far,” Theo cut in. “My father’s resources are extensive, and the wall and domed cage surrounding the capital will make it difficult to truly surprise him.
