Another technique for achieving more weight is to simply release the stone sooner. Ideally, regardless of the shot, you should be trying to release the stone before your body starts to slow down. The earlier you release the shot, the more initial force from the leg drive can be applied to the stone. Of course, an earlier release affects the curl, so be aware of this if you choose to use this method of increasing weight.

At the point of release, if you lower both shoulders in an exaggerated extension, this too can provide a boost of weight (figure 5.2). This method of increasing your weight can be difficult to control, however, so you should have a good feel for your weight before attempting this. By dropping both shoulders at the release, you ensure that you remain square to the target you are sliding toward. There can be a temptation to simply push the stone with the throwing arm, but this usually results in a push from the arm that puts the stone off its intended line.

Figure 5.2 Point of release: (a) normal shoulder position; (b) lower both shoulders during the release to boost the weight of the shot.
