BY THE time Thursday rolled around, Ross and Miles had exchanged a handful of e-mails about their impending meeting. With each one, the birthday garden felt more like a pretense. The first few opened with a paragraph about the garden and ended with a few words of a more personal nature, but that quickly morphed into the opposite. Even so, when Ross saw Miles’s name on his phone at noon, he feared the worst. He plastered a smile on his face before answering. “Hey there, you’re not canceling on me, I hope.”

“No.” The background noise slowly faded, and a sigh came through. “Sorry, something’s come up. Could we meet at the club tomorrow?”

Deep breath; keep the smile. “I hope it’s nothing serious. Tomorrow will be okay, but J—Scarlett has to work….”

“You can be my guest.”

Ross shivered and was very glad to be sitting, because the way Miles stressed the possessive felt like a hug of silken rope around his cock. He swiveled the conference chair toward the window in case an early bird decided to pop in. “I’ll be there.” He didn’t even try to keep his voice steady, to keep the yes-please-tie-me-up out of it.

“Eight?”

“Eight.”
