CHAPTER 19

The next day at work passed quickly. I gave Archie and Mrs. Schultz extra time on their lunch breaks to allay my guilt for playing hooky in the middle of the afternoon to go to Chloe’s. They assured me they were eager for me to go and further Team Cheese’s investigation. I felt comfortable leaving them in charge of the shop, since they were both incredible cheesemonger students.

Before I knew it, Ginger’s car had pulled into one of the spaces out front.

“I’ll have my phone with me, so text or call whenever you need to,” I told them. I scanned the shop one last time to ensure I’d done everything I could to lighten their load while I was gone.

“Yes, Mom,” Archie replied with a glimmer in his eye.

“Yeah, yeah, okay. Thanks again, you two. I hope to be back to help you close.”

I hurriedly dispensed with my apron and left. I waved to Ginger and hopped in her car. Her hair was pulled back in a ponytail and she was dressed in boots over her jeans, a long-sleeved shirt, and a cute vest jacket. She looked casual and chic. Once again, I was reminded of how maybe I should look in the mirror occasionally. My horseback riding wardrobe—switching from khakis to jeans—wasn’t on par. I told myself I’d be able to look like that if I’d had the day off too, but who was I kidding? I ran my fingers through my hair, as if that would make up for the difference.

“Thanks again for letting me tag along,” I said as we pulled out of the parking spot.

“Anything to help. Are you sure you’re okay riding a horse in tennis shoes?” She glanced at me skeptically.

“The last time I rode, I was barefoot on a beach, so this is a step up, right?” It wasn’t like I had a riding outfit hanging in my closet waiting for just such an occasion.

I tried to think of something to talk to Ginger about while we drove to Chloe’s. Baz was the friend we had in common, but neither of us brought him up. I got the feeling she still wasn’t completely comfortable with my friendship with him. Unfortunately, after yesterday’s discovery that Mayor Trumbull might be a suspect, I forgot to ask him about taking Ginger to the dance. We made small talk about the weather, then fell into more silence.

“Oh, I love this song,” I said, unable to hear it, but hoping she’d turn up the radio to give us something to do besides talk.

It worked like a charm. She turned the radio up, only to have it be an insurance jingle.

“It’s catchy,” I said, trying to save face.

A series of songs came on directly afterward, putting us out of our awkward misery for the rest of the car ride.

It was an odd feeling pulling up to the Harrington mansion as a guest rather than as the cheese lady. I doubted I’d be welcomed with open arms by Olivia. Luckily it was Chloe who answered the door.
