Chapter Three

Chris stood there in the doorway, looking smug and amused as he slowly clapped his hands. “Bravo, Valentine. If I’d known you had all that in you, I might have taken you to my bed and fucked you silly long ago.”

“Cringle!”

“Don’t look so pissed off, Cupid.” Chris said his title with a sneer in his voice. “After all, I’m the one who should be angry. You stole into my private stock of wassail, you naughty boy, and you stole what was mine.”

“It was just a bottle --”

“Yes, she is.” He chuckled. “Bottled, that is. But then you had to go and unleash her and, what’s more, you fucked her, Cupid. It’s bad form to indulge in another’s… shall we say, wine?”

With a flick of Chris’s fingers, Cupid’s kilt was flung into his face. “Clothe yourself. Even I can’t take too much pleasure in the sight of your limp dick and your trembling lower lip. Was it that good, Cupid?”

“You should know.” Valentine narrowed his eyes at Chris as he fastened his kilt around his waist. He stared at his most hated enemy as he flexed his shoulders and pulled his wings back into his back.

“No, I would not.” Chris stepped into the room and leered at him. “She was meant to be a gift to someone, but now that gift is spoiled.” He opened his hand, and the teardrop bottle containing Valentine’s… containing Rose dropped neatly into his palm.

Valentine couldn’t stop himself from reaching for her, desperation in his eyes for one moment, before he covered it up with a mask of indifference. Maybe Chris hadn’t noticed.

“She must have been very good. You want her back.”

“I --”

“Don’t deny it, Valentine. We both know it’s true. You want little… Rose, is it? That’s what you named her? You want Rose back.”

Valentine held his tongue even though his heart was racing and he couldn’t help but stare at Chris’s hand, the one that gripped his Rose.

“You don’t have to say anything.” Chris chuckled. “But I will make you an offer.”

Valentine forced himself to look into Chris’s twinkling eyes… and he fought the urge to call forth one of his arrows and plunge one right through one of those twinkling orbs.

“I think a little Christmas Cheer is needed, don’t you? How about a nice little Christmas in February campaign? Nothing much, really. You will still get all the worshipers you need, but if we add a little Christmas to the festivities, we both can reap the rewards. Just imagine all the cute little ornaments they will make -- me and you, red and white, side by side, expanding my power base. If you agree, you can have your little Rose back. Otherwise, I’m sure I can feed this little drop of wine into my Yule log and watch her burn. Nothing like the spirits to keep a cheery fire going. So, Valentine -- Cupid.” He held the tear encasing Rose to his eyes, stared at Valentine through the red of his perfect lover.
