Fourteen

Plunged into sudden darkness, the platter and basket crash to the floor.

“Are you okay?” Logan asks.

“No,” I reply, feeling a warm, furry body rush past my legs, going for the grilled meat. “I’m hungry and tired, and I just want to enjoy our dinner!”

I sound slightly hysterical. Logan moves close and my eyes adjust to the shadows as he rubs my arms and draws me to his chest. “There are still two pieces on the grill. I’ll get those and you grab your flashlight, okay?”

I do as he says, chasing the cats away from the ruined meal on the floor and locating my light in the junk drawer, along with a few candles. Pieces of asparagus are everywhere. I toss the wasted food into the trash as Logan returns, soaked from the now pouring rain. “They’re a bit wet,” he says, setting them on a clean plate, “but better than nothing.”

By candlelight, I call Gloria and get her landline’s answering machine. Before I can stew, she calls me back, telling me she’s fine and not to worry. I add butter and milk to the soft potatoes and mash out my frustration, while Logan changes into dry clothes. When he returns, he pours glasses of sweet tea to round out our make-shift meal and we descend on the food like it’s ambrosia.

The candles add a nuance to the dinner and Logan does his best to lighten the mood, telling me about a scene with a woman dressed in a bunny costume at the courthouse earlier that day. She was protesting an ordinance concerning how many pets a person could own inside the town boundaries and had garnered quite a bit of publicity with the stunt. The lengths some people will go to make a point never ceases to amaze me. Of course, between the two of us, we’re pushing the limit, so I applaud her stand on the subject.

The storm continues to rage outside. The pets have deserted us, in search of hiding places, and the ghosts are nowhere to be seen. Fine with me. I desperately want to tell Logan what I’ve discovered about Hannah and her family, but I’ve sworn not to expose her secret. It feels wrong keeping it from him, but I have to for now.

“Sherlock claims your mother knows about our plan for the secret wedding,” I tell him. “Persephone says she doesn’t.”

He toys with the final bite on his plate. “Who do you believe?”

I’m not sure it matters, but… “Sherlock.”

He sits back and stretches. “If Mother knew, she would have already eviscerated me.”

True. Maybe I’m predisposed to believe the worst about my guardian angel. “Sherlock claims Trysta told her.”

“Trysta?” He scowls. “How would she know?”

“She is a ghost.” At least, we think she is. “You know what Winter says about the dead knowing everything.”

“That’s a scary thought.”

“Isn’t it, though? Anyway, just a warning in case Helen has been informed. We might need to prepare a counterstrike.”

Across the table, he smiles and light dances over his face, giving him a mischievous look.
