Fourteen

The door to the cooler opened and then closed again in quick succession. I glanced up, startled from my daydreams of Brady cupping my cupcake, to see my bestie standing by the cooler door, holding the handle closed.

“What’s up?” I asked, going back to my cupcake counting.

“What’s up? I don’t know, but something is!” she hissed, her cheeks red and her eyes wild. “We aren’t leaving here until you tell me what it is!”

I pushed the tray of black forest cupcakes back onto the rack and stifled a yawn. I didn’t get more than thirty minutes of sleep between rounds of making love with Brady last night. Wait. Can I call it making love? It was just sex, right? Lots and lots of sex. I sighed internally. I’d been having this argument with myself all morning, and I was getting nowhere fast.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Amber. Nothing is up. Are you okay?”

Amber huffed and tossed her hand onto her hip. “It’s almost nine a.m., and you two are standing out there with the most ridiculous grins on your face that I’ve ever seen! Something is up! I know he came to your apartment last night to apologize for the kiss.”

“Oh, he came,” I agreed, biting my cheek to keep from grinning to hard. “Many times.”

“Shut up!” she exclaimed, falling to one knee. “Shut up, shut up, shut up!”

I stared at her silently until she motioned for me to speak. “You just told me to shut up four times.”

“Talk,” she hissed, “it’s cold in here.”

“Long story short, he brought dinner, we ate, I talked to him about taking over as full-time bread baker, and then things devolved to no underwear and lots of sex.”

“Haylee! What the hell? With Brady? Finally?”

There was so much shock, surprise, awe, confusion, and questions inside her that I didn’t know what to address first.

“Yes, with Brady. I’m not sure about the finally part.”

Her eyes rolled nearly all the way around before she pinned them on me again. “Pretend all you want, but we both know finally is the perfect word. You’ve been dancing around each other for years! Oh my God!” she exclaimed, waving her hand in front of her face. “I think I’m having a heart attack. I need to sit down.”

“Don’t be dramatic,” I sighed, crossing my arms over my chest since I was getting cold, too. “It’s only been recently that I started to trust him enough to consider taking this step.”

“He’s been dating as much as you have,” my bestie pointed out.

“He has, but like me, it’s been half-hearted.” Her brow went up in the air, and I held up my hand. “I believe him. What he said in so many words reflected my experiences with dating. He could never find someone who was just the right match. Everyone was always just a hair off-center.”

She motioned at the door of the cooler. “Because the one who was the right match was standing right there the whole time!”

“You are quite excitable this morning,” I said on a yawn.
