Terror of the Vet

Sitting in the waiting room, Albert soon found that a bubble appeared around him as the other visitors in with their pets and their pet’s maladies elected to move away. Rex was creating a sphere of stink that nobody wanted any part of. Despite the cold air outside, he and Jaqueline had driven from Cathy’s house to the vet’s with the windows open. It was that or pass out from the fumes and crash the car.

Albert could picture such an event in his mind and the subsequent explosion that would follow as the gas inside spontaneously combusted to create a fireball and mushroom cloud half of Cumbria might see.

‘Mr Smith and err … Rex Harrison,’ announced the vet, poking his head out of the door but having to check his notes to make sure he had the name right.

‘Come along, Rex,’ said Albert, but Rex wasn’t moving.

‘I know what awaits me in there,’ Rex growled, bracing his front paws against the tile. ‘There’s no way you are getting me to go into that room.’

The vet chuckled. ‘We’re going about this all wrong,’ he laughed as he let the lead go. From behind the counter he produced a tasty looking gravy bone. Six other dogs bounced onto their feet all eager to get it for themselves.

‘I’m not sure that’s going to work,’ said Albert.

The vet wafted it in front of Rex’s nose. ‘I never met a dog that could resist these.’ With an underarm toss he sent it through the open door to his surgery and swept his arm to urge Rex to follow.

Across the waiting room, a teenage girl with a heavyset Labrador and her eyes on her phone suddenly found herself flying through the air like a flag on the back end of a ship. The Labrador was running and cared not one bit about the anchor it was dragging.

Seeing the Labrador go, a Boxer dog tried to follow suit, but his owner was paying attention. Unfortunately, the Boxer still managed to get to the end of his tether before it yanked him to
