CHAPTER 26

The platform was silent as the crowd stared at the figures up on the stage. The three Wise Women all had powerful auras and the pressure they gave off was oppressive. John’s challenge to the authority of the High Priestess and the Wise Women of the tribe was sly in nature, since it put them in an awkward position no matter what happened. Only by killing him could the insult to their honor be removed and the situation resolved, so the three women didn’t bother hiding their deadly intent. Yet for all the strength of their auras, when the mana they stirred up got to John it appeared to vanish, causing them to hesitate.

It would have been one thing if the mana had encountered John’s mana and been contested, but instead it simply ceased to be under their control. Since John wasn’t giving off an aura of any kind, they were unable to understand what was happening, and after sharing a look, they were still unsure what to do. The seconds of indecision dragged out and finally, Ghoa, who had made a big show of coming up to fight John, caved in to the ever-increasing pressure she felt from the crowd and dashed forward, her daggers bursting into flame.

Leaving an afterimage where she’d just been standing, Ghoa moved at least twice as fast as she had when she attacked Ellie, mana bursting from her feet as she charged toward John. A beat slower, the other two Wise Women moved as well. Dagasi, who wielded two weapons like Ghoa, rushed around the edge of the stage, her curved cane starting to glow with a sickly green energy. Still standing at the edge of the stage, Ibakha lifted her arms, revealing a series of small charms hanging from her sleeves that tinkled in the breeze.

Mana began to build up around her as she started to form a spell, and for a brief moment John almost felt bad for what was about to happen. That feeling vanished, however, as Ghoa arrived in front of him, her daggers stabbing at his neck and ribs. Silver blades flashed as John’s sword and dagger blocked the flaming blades, and with a neat step John’s sword stabbed toward Ghoa’s throat. Blurring again, Ghoa vanished from in front of John, moving in a blur as she rotated around to his side.

Sandwiched between Ghoa and Dagasi, John felt attacks coming from both directions and darted forward, heading straight for Ibakha, who was still casting her spell. Down below the stage, Ellie, who was watching the fight with bated breath, heard Zayaat groan and shot him a quick look.

“It’s a trap,” he explained. “They baited him into attacking Ibakha.”

By the time he’d finished speaking, the mana on the stage suddenly swelled and the charms hanging from the Wise Woman’s sleeves suddenly chimed, all at the same time, drowning the stage in rays of light. The light was heatless, but everyone present could tell exactly how dangerous it was as the rays bounced in all directions.
