Chapter 10

I had to admit, the punch caught me off guard despite the fact I had asked Lauren to do it. I sprang into action before anyone else had a chance to move despite the momentary shock. I jumped to my feet, grabbed Lauren’s shoulder, and pulled her to her feet as gently as I could.

“You are under arrest,” I began. “For assaulting a Police Officer, you--”

“No!” Simon shouted as his brain seemed to catch up with what had just happened. “What are you doing?”

Skye stepped in front of him and held her hands up.

“Sir,” the young Officer said sternly. “This woman just attacked the Inspector, she’s going to have to come with us.”

Lauren looked as shocked as the rest of them at her own actions, though she managed to give me a grateful smile for a half second before I took the handcuffs off my belt.

“Don’t put those on her!” Leo said with wide eyes. “Lauren, what did you do that for? We warned you that she could get hysterical. This is all your fault.”

“Step back,” Skye said firmly. “Lauren will be coming with us.”

The pink-haired woman stared at me with wide eyes as I placed the handcuffs gently over her wrists and firmly held her by her arm.

“This way. Miss...” I trailed off as I realised I didn’t even know her last name.

“Kaminska,” Lauren said quietly. “Lauren Kaminska.”

The side of my face throbbed, but she hadn’t hit my nose hard enough to break it which I was thankful for. I had already broken it enough times in my life that it had changed shape.

“Okay, Miss Kaminska,” I said loudly as I started to lead Lauren to the doorway. “Let’s go, and please don’t struggle.”

“Get Tristan,” Simon spat to Leo, and the younger man bolted out of the room in front of me and sprinted down the corridor.

“That’s not necessary,” I hissed. “We’re leaving. Come on, Officer Stewart.”

“Yes, sir,” Skye said hurriedly as she barged past Simon and strode in front of me.

I didn’t want to have to encounter Tristan before we left. I had no doubts I could handle him if it came to a fight, but we were severely outnumbered in the cult.

“You can’t take her,” Simon said, and he grabbed Lauren’s other arm as he spoke. “You must have frightened her. It’s not her fault she felt the need to defend herself.”

“Get off her,” I spat, but Simon kept a tight grip on Lauren’s arm as if it was a bizarre game of tug of war.

“If you don’t let her go I’ll arrest you as well,” Skye said loudly as she stepped close to Simon.

Skye’s hand went to her taser, and Simon backed away. I gave Lauren a gentle tug, and she started to walk quietly by my side. Simon started to shout at the top of his voice, and the other doors along the hallway started to open. Curious cult members watched the unfolding scene from the doorways, but no one moved towards us.

“What’s happening?” one of the men shouted.
