Chapter 13

Macleod was not happy. After being out in the rain from chasing down McGrath’s intruder, he was now standing in the room that had been set aside as Jona Nakamura’s temporary mortuary. The pair had searched in vain. Having raised the platform manager, Macleod along with McCallan and Hope had performed a roll call. With work in progress on the platform, it had taken a while to get the exact numbers. He had received many a stare from workers who had been woken rudely in their slumber. Having been kept from his bed, Macleod had no time for this. Any disgruntled voices were soon snapped closed.

There had been nowhere for the man to run, nowhere to hide. Macleod knew that he must be on the vessel somewhere. About two hours later, when all had been accounted for except for one person, Macleod was not surprised to find the name of the man amongst the five Stornoway suspects they narrowed down. Alastair Nicholson was the one suspect who currently didn’t have a Stornoway address. Macleod sent out search parties to look for him on the rig. The howling wind and rain didn’t help and the occasional smattering of hail that came across the rig left the inspector cold. When he eventually returned to his bed at around 5:00 a.m., all he wanted to do was to get a good night’s sleep. However, he knew he had to check-in with Ross at six and so decided not to do any more than simply doze off in a chair.

Taking the call from Ross, he was interested to learn of the relationship between Mairi Nicholson and the school teacher. Maybe this would shed some light on what was really happening, why the murders were taking place. He also left Ross to examine Alastair Nicholson’s house when he could. He knew his constable was more than able, and the rest of the houses would be covered by Stewart that day. It was after Macleod had settled back in his chair, sipping on a freshly poured cup of coffee, that the door was rapped. Thunder was probably more of an appropriate expression for it nearly came off its hinges. While opening it, he saw McCallan, the platform manager, and he was not in a good way.

‘There’s been a body. There’s a body in the water.’

‘Where?’ asked Macleod.

‘It was spotted about three miles off in the sea by the guard vessel. The guard vessel saw it. It’s going to pick him up. I think it’s a body. There’s no movement. You don’t get many people out there.’

‘Did he have a life jacket on?’ asked Macleod.

‘I don’t think so,’ said the platform manager. ‘If they don’t, you won’t always find them. I mean, you go down and maybe reappear on the surface sometimes, somewhere, but I don’t know. I don’t know about his buoyancy and what he had on. I don’t know.’

Macleod could see the man was shaking. No wonder, this would be the second death on his platform in a space of a week.
