Jack drained the bottle of beer as he sat in the bar waiting for Maria to start her shift. After collecting his belongings from Mayor Riversâ home heâd driven back to the bar to see if he could speak with Maria but she wasnât there. Sheâd given him her number at the end of the previous evening and so he called her. She told him her shift didnât start until five and she was busy at the store in Jasper but maybe sheâd see him later.
He figured it would give him the opportunity to talk to those in town and possibly figure out a way to find the two skinheads. If Knox was hiding them, he was doing a good job as the owner of the bar had reeled off the names of each of the skinheads in the bar on the previous night. The two men he was searching for werenât among them.
As he sat there watching people come and go, he couldnât help but feel heâd let Mayor Rivers down. Heâd been good to him; hospitable even. But Jack had good reason. He couldnât get caught up in some small-town bullshit between council and white supremacists, he was there for one reason only and heâd be damned if heâd get sidetracked and lose whatever chance he had through giving a witness statement.
âHey Keith,â a familiar voice said from behind him.
âSheriff. Arenât you on duty?â
Jack glanced in the mirror and saw him.
âThat I am. Can I get a coffee?â
âComing up.â
Jack glanced sideways and tried to avoid looking at him. The sheriff took off his Stetson hat and placed it on the bar and took a seat beside him. âYou here with Rivers, Mr. Winchester?â
âNope,â Jack said looking at his reflection in the barâs mirror across from him.
The sheriff drummed his fingers on the counter. âHeâs a good man. Has taken on a lot of responsibility running this town and put up with far more than I would.â He paused. âSo how do you know him?â
Jack picked up on his casual manner. He was grilling him in a roundabout way. It was obvious. He considered downing his drink and leaving but he didnât want to look suspicious. Besides, he didnât have anything to hide barring the fight last night but if he was there to arrest him he would have done it by now.
âHe offered me a place to stay,â Jack said, opting to be truthful.
âHuh! Why thatâs real generous of him. Youâre aware there are lodgings in Jasper, right?â
Jack nodded. âIâm checking in there today.â
âSo why the offer?â
âYouâd have to ask him.â
He snorted and nodded staring at him. Keith returned with the coffee and placed it in front of him. âThanks, Keith. Keep the change,â he said tossing a few notes down. The sheriff poured some milk, added two spoonfulâs of sugar and stirred it. âLook, Iâve been policing a long time. I have one year left before I retire. I really donât give two shits if you came to Riversâ aid and laid down a beating on Knoxâs men.
