Jack drained the bottle of beer as he sat in the bar waiting for Maria to start her shift. After collecting his belongings from Mayor Rivers’ home he’d driven back to the bar to see if he could speak with Maria but she wasn’t there. She’d given him her number at the end of the previous evening and so he called her. She told him her shift didn’t start until five and she was busy at the store in Jasper but maybe she’d see him later.

He figured it would give him the opportunity to talk to those in town and possibly figure out a way to find the two skinheads. If Knox was hiding them, he was doing a good job as the owner of the bar had reeled off the names of each of the skinheads in the bar on the previous night. The two men he was searching for weren’t among them.

As he sat there watching people come and go, he couldn’t help but feel he’d let Mayor Rivers down. He’d been good to him; hospitable even. But Jack had good reason. He couldn’t get caught up in some small-town bullshit between council and white supremacists, he was there for one reason only and he’d be damned if he’d get sidetracked and lose whatever chance he had through giving a witness statement.

“Hey Keith,” a familiar voice said from behind him.

“Sheriff. Aren’t you on duty?”

Jack glanced in the mirror and saw him.

“That I am. Can I get a coffee?”

“Coming up.”

Jack glanced sideways and tried to avoid looking at him. The sheriff took off his Stetson hat and placed it on the bar and took a seat beside him. “You here with Rivers, Mr. Winchester?”

“Nope,” Jack said looking at his reflection in the bar’s mirror across from him.

The sheriff drummed his fingers on the counter. “He’s a good man. Has taken on a lot of responsibility running this town and put up with far more than I would.” He paused. “So how do you know him?”

Jack picked up on his casual manner. He was grilling him in a roundabout way. It was obvious. He considered downing his drink and leaving but he didn’t want to look suspicious. Besides, he didn’t have anything to hide barring the fight last night but if he was there to arrest him he would have done it by now.

“He offered me a place to stay,” Jack said, opting to be truthful.

“Huh! Why that’s real generous of him. You’re aware there are lodgings in Jasper, right?”

Jack nodded. “I’m checking in there today.”

“So why the offer?”

“You’d have to ask him.”

He snorted and nodded staring at him. Keith returned with the coffee and placed it in front of him. “Thanks, Keith. Keep the change,” he said tossing a few notes down. The sheriff poured some milk, added two spoonful’s of sugar and stirred it. “Look, I’ve been policing a long time. I have one year left before I retire. I really don’t give two shits if you came to Rivers’ aid and laid down a beating on Knox’s men.
