Chapter Twelve
Good or bad, I wasnât the first one Wayne chose to take to view an apartment.
Manager Neil already knew which unit was his Juneau Wildlife World home away from home, but he requested that Wayne go with him to take a look at it. He said heâd popped in now and then recently but had a few questions.
On my request, Wayne said he would take me into my apartment after he took Neil. Which meant I got to go before the volunteers, since Marnie already stayed here often to aid in her food preparation. She already knew where her apartment was.
Wayne indicated heâd be ready in about half an hour, which suggested he figured heâd have to spend a little time with Neil. Oh well. Iâd use that time wisely. It didnât give me much opportunity to go out and view our wildlife, but I figured Iâd try.
Hopefully, Iâd see some, and if not, Iâd know to take another trail later.
And so Sasha and I headed toward one of the rear pathways. Lettie asked if she could join us.
âSure,â I told her.
We started out on the one weâd ventured on before together but veered off on a dirt side path that was different, although unsurprisingly also lined with a chain-link fence. The closest landscape here was flat, although like most areas within the sanctuary, it soon rose into vast, rolling hillsides.
This time, instead of mountain goats, we saw reindeer in the distance. âOh, look!â Lettie breathed. Iâd seen them at the same time and gestured for Sasha to sit as we observed. The small herd didnât get close anyway, which wasnât a surprise. Their antlers were magnificent. They seemed to be scavenging for something to eat, and despite the chill in the air, I figured theyâd be successful.
And soon, when the bad weather Wayne was forecasting occurred, I could only hope all the animals found what they needed, especially when food prepared for them here wasnât available when they wanted it.
As always, I had an urge to stay and watch them. But I had to go back to view my apartment.
And talk to Wayne.
Both were definitely important to me. And so I said to Lettie, âTime for Sasha and me to get back and see where weâll be staying when the weather gets bad.â
âDoesnât seem so bad now,â Lettie said, putting her face in the sky and smiling.
I allowed myself to feel the coolness on my cheeks, inhale the fresh, chilly but not icy air, and agreed with her.
âBut this is Alaska,â I said, as if I had to remind her.
âOh, yeah,â she said. âItâll get worse. Probably a lot worse, and probably really soon. See you later. Iâm hanging out here for now. But I hope to get assigned an apartment too.â So she must intend to spend a lot of time here later, despite her temporary job.
She pulled a small notebook from inside her jacket and started making notes.
After Sasha and I walked back to the welcome building, we went straight into the separate apartment building.
