Granita was running pretty true to form, Simon thought as he sat poker-faced in the uncomfortable folding chair. The moans, the incantations, the shaking of the table were all standard. The only difference tonight was the woman beside him, her cold, damp hand trembling in his.

And then there was Miles on the other side, breathing down that absurd excuse for a dress. If Simon had seen the dress that Granita had given Marielle he would have put a stop to it before Miles could run his lascivious eyes over her. He’d been half tempted to wrap the shawl back around her like a mummy, but had resisted the impulse. The other half of him couldn’t stand to cover up such a delectable expanse of flesh, particularly when she blushed so charmingly. And it was nowhere near indecent, just slightly, irresistibly daring.

Nevertheless, tomorrow morning he was going to get that dress away from her and hide it. She shouldn’t be allowed out in public in it—it was too tempting. If it were up to him he’d keep it around for her to wear when no one else was around. No one but himself.

But it wasn’t up to him—it was none of his business. The only thing he could do was get rid of the damned thing, so she didn’t get into any more trouble she couldn’t handle, he told himself with a shade of self-righteousness he knew was absurd.

Miles wasn’t paying any more attention to Granita’s mumbo jumbo than he was, which was surprising, considering this was the first time he’d been invited. Simon had been at least vaguely interested the first couple of times he’d been forced to sit through one of these. But Miles seemed far more interested in peering down Marielle’s dress, something that Simon would have found extremely annoying if it hadn’t been for Marielle’s discomfort. She had the good sense to see Miles for the lecherous fribble that he was. So instead of wanting to strangle Miles, Simon decided he’d be satisfied with bashing his perfect teeth in.

That crack about the rock group Musclebound was another thing, Simon thought morosely. It had to have been a coincidence, an unfortunate slip of the tongue. There was no way Miles could know anything about that whole sordid, damnable period in his life.

Except that Simon didn’t believe in coincidences. And Miles had an uncanny ability to know things that no one else could possibly know, and he took absolute delight in using that knowledge for his own advantage.

Maybe he’d been hiding his head in the sand too long. Maybe it was time to have it out with his manipulative boss, find out what he really knew and what, for that matter, he thought about it. Not that Miles’s opinion meant anything. Miles was such a manipulative sleaze he’d probably have more respect for Simon if he knew how low he’d sunk in the past.

Granita’s moans increased and Mrs. Meltirk began to moan in counterpoint. Her highness always enjoyed these evenings, even though she understood not a single word.
