Grace parked next to Oliver’s truck, the bed of which was already half filled with folding chairs.

Monica stood in the Evergreen Event storage unit, propped up by her crutches. She used the end of one crutch to point to the next object she wanted the others to move. Dan, who had taken the day off of work, hefted one end of a table and Oliver grabbed the other. Jane shouldered a long black duffel bag and followed the boys out toward the truck.

Grace joined them near the bed. “Jane, that looks terribly heavy.”

Jane smiled. “It’s actually not so bad.” She hefted the bag up onto the truck bed. Her hair spilled out of a messy ponytail at the top of her head, and her tee shirt, torn at the bottom, was smudged with dirt. Clearly she’d been hard at work for some time now, whether that was here at the storage unit or back at her father’s house, Grace did not know. “How was the bike race?” she asked.

Grace had to step aside to make room for her son and Dan. As they loaded the folding table up into the bed she said, “Good. And I had a chance to swing by Sheila Vern's address, afterward.”

“Did you?” Jane raised her fine brows. “Were my parking signs there?”

“No,” Grace said. “And actually, I spoke to her landlord, a friendly woman named Magda. She informed me that Sheila’s been out of town for the past two weeks. So, it seems to me that the person behind all the acts of sabotage can not be Sheila.”

Jane leaned against the truck. She tugged at a stray strand of hair as she thought. “Wow… no way. I was so sure it was her.” Now she looked up. “Babe, did you hear that?”

Oliver finished arranging the table. He hopped down. “Hear what?”

“Sheila’s not the one who stole the signs and did all the other stuff.”

Grace nodded. “She’s been out of town. I heard it from her landlord.”

Oliver scratched the back of his head. “Really? Shoot. Well, I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t call her up out of the blue, then. Better to keep her out of it.”

Jane went to him and hugged him around the waist. As she stood there at his side she said, “But then, who’s doing all this to us?”

Oliver shook his head, bewildered.

Jane bit her lip. “We had another crazy thing happen, Grace. It was this morning. Babe, tell your mom.” She patted Oliver’s stomach.

“So, this morning we got a call from the caterer,” Oliver said.

“He’s a great guy,” Jane added. “Old friend of my dad’s… He used to have a restaurant here in Granton, but now he and his wife just stick to special events.”

Oliver picked up the story there. “He was calling to confirm that the wedding was canceled.”

Grace frowned. “How did he get the idea it was canceled?”

“He said a woman called him and told him so,” Oliver said.

Dan hopped down from the truck bed and walked to the unit.
