Chapter 24

Kenzie

Jos helped out some with my work, but he was also a distraction, so I didn’t finish any earlier. I still enjoyed having him with me. His commentaries as he chatted with fans on the band’s social media accounts were amusing.

By the time I finished making calls and responding to emails, he seemed more relaxed in his social media interactions.

“Done!” I announced as I closed my laptop and collapsed onto the bed beside Jos.

He set his phone beside him on the bed and looked over at me with a smile. “Finally! You work way too hard.”

“There’s a lot to get done on a tour, and it’s taking longer because things haven’t gone smoothly.”

“The problem with Snow Daze definitely added more stress to the tour. We had a similar problem with our old bassist when we opened for Reckless Release,” he mused. “He wasn’t arrested or anything like that, but he still had to drop out of the tour. It was less stressful since Reckless Release had played with Lex before, so they weren’t worried about whether he was good enough. It was their bassist, Harley, who got him to join the tour.”

“Snow Daze’s issues have only been part of the problem,” I replied. “The drama surrounding us isn’t helping. Two of your roadies had to be fired in San Diego, so I needed to get replacements, and there was a ton of paperwork with that.”

“How come I didn’t hear about that?” he asked.

“Because I’m doing my job,” I told him. “I’m supposed to keep everything running smoothly.”

“You need an assistant,” he said as he rolled to his side to look at me.

“It won’t always be this bad,” I insisted. “I’m still getting used to all the details I need to handle, and more than normal was thrown at me early in this tour. Madi insists it’s not always going to be like this.”

“Do you think it’s a bad sign?” he asked. “All the problems we’ve had so far, I mean.”

“No,” I replied. “Things should settle down. Madi says this isn’t the worst she’s seen on a tour. The drama surrounding our situation was unexpected, and we only have ourselves to blame for that.”

“I should say I’m sorry.”

“But you’re not,” I reminded him. “I’m not sorry either. Everything will get easier.”

“Let’s go out,” he suggested.

“We’re supposed to meet the guys for dinner,” I reminded him.

“They’ll be cool if we bail on them to do something together,” he argued. “I want you all to myself with no computer demanding your attention.”

I hesitated, not sure how we’d make this work. “It might be easier to wait to try dating after the tour. If we go out alone, I need to arrange a car and security to go with us. That’s more work.”

“You’re right,” he agreed. “I want to take you out soon, but this may not be the best night. How about if we order room service and hang out here tonight? Or we can hang out in my room. It’s bigger.”

“You have the bigger room, yet you end up in my room more often than not,” I mused.
