Chapter 10

Jo navigated the corridors of the ship. As narrow as they were, they gave her a sense of confinement, one that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. The idea that perhaps they reminded her of her time in prison left her unsettled. She tucked that part of her life right back under thoughts of her current mission and hoped that it would stay there. She knew exactly who she wanted to speak to but tracking him down proved to be more difficult than she anticipated. There were several security offices on multiple floors. Her legs had begun to ache from the wandering and searching. But finally, it paid off when she saw the man she had been hunting.

“Excuse me, Blake?” Jo paused a few feet away from the man. He nodded to the two guards he had been speaking to, then turned towards Jo.

“Yes? Can I help you?” Blake slid his hands into his pockets and stared at her.

“I’m a friend of Eddy’s.” Jo took a step closer to him.

“I know. I’ve seen you two together.”

“I have some information that you might be interested in.”

“You do?” Blake squinted at her as if attempting to figure out exactly how to take her.

“Yes, do you have a minute to discuss it?” Jo flipped her hair back over her shoulder and turned on the charm as she smiled. Despite the fact that she was easily twenty years older than Blake, she knew how to flirt with a man to get information she needed.

“Uh, sure.” Blake shifted from one foot to the other, then directed her towards a small office off the corridor. “What kind of information do you have for me?”

“I’m not sure if it will help or not.” Jo perched on the edge of the desk in the office, while Blake walked around to the side of it and picked up a pile of papers.

“Anything that you think might help, I want to hear.” Blake looked up from the papers and met her eyes. “Eddy has been a great help to me.”

“I’m sure he has.” Jo smiled as she held his gaze. “He’s a very experienced and intelligent man. And very determined. I’ve come across some information that just might solve your murder.”

“All right then, spill it.” Blake set the papers back down and leaned his hands on the table. As he studied her, his body leaned forward enough to create only inches of space between them.

“Carson and Annabella got married shortly before they boarded the ship.” Jo smiled as she looked at him. “She will most likely inherit his fortune, now that he’s dead. I’d say that gives her plenty of motive.”

“I agree.” Blake took a slow breath, then straightened up. “You’re sure about this? Where did you get the information from?”

Jo wasn’t sure if it was the right thing to divulge the information, but she needed Annabella to be distracted, and this was the best way to make that happen.

“A reliable source.” Jo tipped her head to the side.
