Chapter Nineteen

The captain and Kelly were both sitting on the Captain’s side of the desk, two chairs squashed together, with two more on the other side for Addi and me.

Kelly was wearing a black dress, and with her bright yellow plastic beaded necklace and bracelets, she had the air of a busy but irritated bee.

“Sit down, sit down,” the captain said impatiently as we walked across the room. “Right, tell me, who did it? Who is our killer?”

Oh yeah, you’ve got to love clients who expect a case to be solved the minute an investigator is hired. “We’re making good progress, developing a list of suspects, and eliminating others.”

Kelly shook her head and tilted forward. “It’s been days! I’ve done a million things since we last spoke. And you haven’t found who did it? What’s the hold up?”

“These things take time,” I told her with some iciness. I was actually pleased with our progress so far. Things were moving forward nicely, and there was a chance everything could drop into place at any minute. Anyone upset at the speed of our investigation didn’t know what they were talking about. Unfortunately, it looked like we had a pair of them.

“Ms. Black has been exceedingly professional, and she has been working incredibly hard,” Addi said with rather more steel in her voice than I expected. Farm girl could be tough! “She’s doing an amazing job.”

Kelly and the Captain looked at each other and sighed in unison before turning back to us. “We just thought that with a professional, things would happen faster,” Kelly said. “And Ethan tells me that Addi is helping you as well. With two of you on the case, it should be done lickety-split!”

“Yeah?”

The captain and Kelly nodded together. They were of the same mind. It was time to disabuse them of their erroneous notions.

“Think of it this way,” I told them. “How long does it take a woman to produce a child? You know, up until birth?”

The captain scrunched up his face. “Nine months?” he said, as if hazarding a guess.

“Okay. What about if you hired nine women? Could they get it done in one month?”

The captain looked to Kelly for the answer.

“No, but you’re a professional!”

“Could a midwife get it done in four and a half months?”

Kelly shook her head rapidly, not pleased with my argument.

“It’ll take as long as it takes. But we’re getting there. We’re doing the job, and we’re doing it right.”

Kelly squeezed her hands together in annoyance at being defeated. “Well… just keep us informed.” She burst to her feet as if escaping from restraints. “Look, I’ve got a thousand things to do today, but keep us informed!”

Kelly was out the door before we were, scuttling off to micromanage a thousand different things aboard the ship.

“I’m busy, too!” the captain said to us as a kind of farewell before we left. As we were exiting, he was shuffling a large stack of papers on his desk.

“What next?” Addi asked excitedly when we were clear.
