Chapter 15

Three carriages stood along the street entrance. Horses were calm and waiting patiently. Sunlight painted the tops of tall, stone buildings as a cool breeze flowed along street level. Worn cobblestones made up the street as guards stood around the carriages, securing the area.

Lord Giles, Lukas, Nydora, and Malak led the way. The rest of the group followed behind, Jez glancing up at the guards on either side of them with a wary yellow eye. The guards didn’t acknowledge her, staring at nothing as they stood at attention. She quickly noted some of the guards were very pale, and one of them was sweating profusely, but continued to stand at attention.

Arand and Kyra walked side by side, taking in the splendor of the city.

“We were twelve when we were last here,” Kyra said with a low tone.

Arand nodded as he glanced around. “It feels like a lifetime ago.”

Kyra looked down as they walked. Vicious snarls filled a distant part of her mind. They grew louder with every step and a memory of foul blood touched her tongue like a ghostly presence in the night.

Arand turned his gaze to her and saw the darkness in her eyes. He reached over and took her hand into his.

Kyra lifted her gaze to Arand’s kind smile. The darkness in her eyes receded as she squeezed his hand.

Behind them, Fara eyed the pair holding hands and a loving smile appeared.

The coachmen bent down and flipped out stairs from under the carriage. They then stood up and opened the doors to each carriage with a slight bow.

“Nydora and Malak, please ride with me,” Lord Commander Giles said with a kind tone.

The shadow elf smiled as she took Lukas’s arm into hers. “Thank you, Lord Commander Giles, but I wish for Lukas to join us in the first carriage, if that’s okay?”

Lord Giles gave a single nod. “Of course,” he said as he moved to the other side of the carriage, across from the coachman.

Lukas walked with Nydora to the open doorway and helped the shadow elf up. Nydora smiled pleasantly as she stepped up into the carriage. Lukas turned to Malak and he held out a large hand, signaling him to go first. The mage nodded before stepping into the carriage. Malak followed.

The rest of the group stepped into the other carriages. Kyra and Arand stepped into one with Fara close behind. Jez and Wynn glanced at the last carriage before looking at each other. The pair shrugged as they walked to it and stepped in.

Doors closed and locked. Coachman climbed up to their seats and made a clicking sound out of the sides of their mouths. The horses began moving, their hooves clomping along the cobblestone street.

Nydora sat in the middle of one side. Malak barely fit, his form dwarfing the shadow elf. Lukas sat on the other side, looking out as the carriage made its way down the street. Across from them, Lord Giles sat, his gaze firmly on the beautiful shadow elf. Six guards mounted horseback and followed.
