When the porch door closed behind them, I gathered up the dead crows in a blanket from my car and drove to the butterfly sanctuary. There I gently moved the crows to a spot on the knoll and placed them on the ground, beaks toward each other, bodies pointing in the four directions of the compass. When I was finished, I backed away several yards and lowered myself to the ground in Kneeling Pose. Also called Thunderbolt, this pose helped calm and stabilize the mind.
I whispered a prayer to Spirit.
Then I waited.
Eventually, a single crow fluttered in and sent out a call. Soon it was joined by dozens of its comrades. They filled the trees and covered the ground around the dead. The air became a shroud heavy with their cries of mourning. They were grieving friends, perhaps a brother or sister. Iâd read that crows remember family members. A couple of birds dropped twigs on the dead.
I donât know how long I sat with the crows. After a while, I closed my eyes and emptied my mind, all feeling swept into the vortex of this place. Slowly thoughts drifted in. I thought of Frankâs fury and fear. I recalled the uneasy glances in Northern Lights, the whispers I pretended not to hear. No one had been arrested for the murder of Jacques Pine, and the people in a town that seldom locked its doors were now throwing their dead bolts.
As Louisa said, fear always looked for the easiest target.
I opened my eyes.
Evening was nearing and the crows had finished paying their respects.
With a feeling of helplessness in my chest, I stiffly rose and buried the crows that Frank had killed.
