SHE LED HIM in silence out of the alley, and they began a journey next to the empty street, puddles instead of people all around them.

Keeping up with her, looking at her when he could, he said, “Where are we going?”

“A place where I can show you how that thing won’t let me die. You’re not convinced.”

He laughed just once, a strained laugh, and gave a quick glance behind them.

“Thing? It was just a priest.”

She stopped them both and glared at him.

“It wasn’t a goddamn priest.”

“Sure looked like a priest.”

She scoffed and shook her head, ready to snarl again at him.

Behind him, something screeched, the volume starting low and increasing, reaching a panicked level. Like it was sprinting in to attack him, but it quieted itself instead.

He winced, watching her, and saw that she’d had no reaction.

“You really didn’t . . . you, um—”

“No. I only thought it was a priest the first time. It’s not, Socrates. No way.”

He stared at her as she waited for him to speak. It took a moment.

“No. I mean, did you hear . . .”

She just kept staring, tipping her head.

“Never mind.”
