Chapter 18

Catlyn tossed and turned throughout the night, worrying about Lisa, even though Jade promised to protect her. After all, Michael had threatened her at the pet store without Charlie or her other guards seeing him. Why couldn’t he do the same with Lisa? How could she warn her friend she was in danger without unnecessarily frightening her?

Daylight didn’t bring with it any solutions to Catlyn’s problem. Needing a distraction, she drove to her favorite Jupiter Moon in Tustin. The October morning was unusually warm. As she walked across the parking lot, she decided spending time in the sun with a good book would take her mind off her problems for a while.

She carried her iced chai and gooey pecan-cinnamon roll outside. She ignored Smoker Dude, sitting in his car in the parking lot. With Dilan’s truck parked next to it, she doubted her stalker would do anything. So far, he and Blond Guy only watched her, keeping tabs on her for their boss, Michael.

The scar on her palm tingled as she sat down, and a wave of terror swamped her. Catlyn’s eyes darted all around, finally catching sight of a green bushy tail disappearing into the bushes. She didn’t know why the creature made her so afraid. She watched the area for several minutes, but didn’t see the creature again.

Relieved, Catlyn propped her book up to read while she ate and settled more comfortably into her chair. As she popped the last bite of pastry into her mouth, she sensed someone approach her table.

“Mind if I join you?” a man with a sexy voice asked.

She looked up and smiled at the cute detective McLarkin. “Sure.” Catlyn indicated the empty seat.

Since the night at the La Boucherie, she hadn’t spoken to Karl. As Sean sat, Catlyn studied him over the rim of her cup. He wore black pants, with a button-down teal shirt opened at the collar. Every other time she’d seen him, he’d been wearing a tie. She liked the more casual style on him better. His short sleeves revealed muscular, tanned arms that weren’t too muscle-bound. His dark blue eyes had crinkles at the corners, and as he smiled, she decided they enhanced his rugged charm. She wished his sandy-blond hair was longer. The buzz-cut reminded her too much of her watcher, Blond Guy.

“I showed your jewelry to my grandmother,” Sean said. “I saw her Friday night. She likes your work. She’s intrigued by your sound healing, but she lives out in Temecula. It’s difficult for her to come this way. She hates to drive.”

“The traffic is worse in Orange County than in Riverside. Although there is the toll road now that helps somewhat.”

“She’d never pay to drive on a highway! She argues that we pay enough in taxes that we should have good roads.”

“I agree with her.” Catlyn wished his grandmother would book a healing appointment. She sounded like someone Catlyn would enjoy meeting.

They chatted about inconsequential things, such as the weather and the latest Hollywood couple. The more they talked, the more she liked him and wanted to spend time with him.
