Christiaan woke up with a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach. He’d gone to sleep with the image of the ten freezing Russians etched in his mind. He’d fallen asleep quickly enough—his body and mind were exhausted, and no amount of horror could stop that—but woke up feeling a strong sense of dread. The block was more quiet than usual as they prepared to head out for roll call.

When they arrived, Christiaan could hardly believe his eyes. He’d witnessed plenty of dreadful things in the camp, but the sight that greeted him that morning took it to another level. The ten Russian soldiers stood in the same place, their hands still tied behind their backs. Their faces were turned downward, toward an invisible adversary trampling over their bodies. Every hair on their heads was frosted white with icicles, and ice had already formed around their extremities. Christiaan wanted to look away, but snowflakes falling on his face and a gust of cold wind drew his eyes back to the macabre sight as he filed into position among the rest of the prisoners. The water buckets lay carelessly tossed around the frozen bodies as mute testimony to this evil.

The Appellplatz filled in silence, the prisoners paying their respects to the brave but foolish Russian sculptures. The guards moved in and started their prisoner counts without acknowledging the dead Russians. Another day at Mauthausen had begun.
