Chapter Seven
âWhat were you thinking?â
Bedwyrâs deep voice thundered through the back sitting room, rattling the glass in the windows and making the entire house shake. Liadain stood alone in the middle of the floor, her hand still dripping blood even with the hem of Telâs shirt wrapped around it. The Duke had excused himself early in the discussion to see about replacing his smart phone that had melted into a lump of plastic parts. It still worked, but the current shape made it difficult for him to access most of his icons on the home screen.
Once they reached the vehicle and safely outstripped the wolf pack, Liadain had offered to replace the phone at her expense. Tel had very graciously declined.
Evidently his chivalry hadnât extended to keeping her company while her ears were pinned back by an irate knight.
âIâm waiting,â said Bedwyr, and she pulled her thoughts back to the present.
He stood out of immediate reach, his arms crossed over his chest, and his chin lowered in a truly formidable frown. She could only be thankful that Gwalchmai hadnât returned with Peredur yet, and the Penderwydd was still busy at the castle. Having either man witness her humiliation would have made it ten times worse.
âLiadain?â
Three times was probably the only margin she was going to get before he erupted to an even louder yelling, and one that would last several more hours. She steeled herself for Bedwyr to get angrier with her, so they could reach the other side of this disagreement and see the value of what she had retrieved.
I can get through this.
âYou know I can call the horses better from an elevation,â she said, cautiously watching his expression to gauge his reaction. âThe tower is closer than the hills.â
He bit his lip, and dropped his gaze to the floor between them. âDid you call the horses?â
âNo,â she said, not happy that she hadnât, but still certain the alternative was worth the price. âI did not.â
âDid you intend to go to the tower with only the Duke as a guard for you, knowing that there were several enchantments still active that could have made you inaccessible to us?â
This time she hesitated, not sure where he was going with the line of questioning, but having an idea. She didnât particularly like the idea.
âI originally intended to have him drive me up to the hills, but changed my mind.â Liadain closed the fingers of her injured hand and winced as the clots broke loose. âI thought about the creatures already sent against us, and the sense I got shortly after the accident happened on the main road. It was my thought to scavenge for anything we could use against a being so powerful.â
âI see,â said Bedwyr, his tone still indicating that he was struggling to do just that. His incisive intelligence meant he would try very hard to see her point of view, and heâd succeeded often in the past. âAnd what did you find?â
She sighed and looked away, not
