Chapter 28, lookinâ for blood
Getting no response, McAllen said, âThe roofâs our best vantage point and shootinâ position. As soon as we spot âem, two people go up top ⦠our best shots ⦠thatâd be Jeff and Steve. That leaves five of us on the ground.â
That wasnât exactly a plan, but at least it was an action. Perhaps if we put several actions together, we could approximate a plan.
âFrom what direction do you think theyâll come?â I asked.
Masters eagerly jumped in. âFrom Silverton, they gotta come down along the rail line and straight into Durango. Theyâll go into town because theyâll need directions to this ranch.â
âIf Lawâs clever, only a couple of riders will go into town so as to not raise a ruckus,â I added.
Masters literally puffed up with pride. âI worked for Law and got to know him a bit. Heâs careless. I bet they all ride into town throwing up a big cloud of dust. He likes a big show. No matter what time they arrive, they wonât hang around town. Not Law. No, sir. Theyâll race out here right off. The manâs impatient as hell.â He pointed toward Durango. âThat means theyâll come from that direction. Theyâll charge ahead until they see the ranch. I was a teamster, and I can tell you, we wonât be hard to find, âcuz those heavy wagons have carved ruts between town and here. Almost a regular trail by now. And theyâll see the ranch from afar âcuz the barn sticks up like a big windmill on this-here hill. When they spot the ranch, they wonât hesitate a secondâjust charge right in. Theyâre too dumb to guess we got lookouts or that weâll be ready for âem.â
I was surprised to hear McAllen say, âSounds about right.â
Awarded approval, Masters continued to hold forth like a seasoned army scout. âHe could circle part of his men around and attack from two sides. Or he might ride direct on up to the barn friendly like ⦠leastwise till the shooting starts. If he thinks we didnât spot him, he might hunker down and wait for nightfall, then sneak in close and try to take us by surprise. Or he could camp between us and Durango and dare us to try escaping into town.â
âA siege?â I asked skeptically.
âYep, situated up on this hill, it would be the smart move, especially with seven of us.â
McAllen harrumphed. âNot likely. Take too long, and they got business back up the hill. Besides, they donât know we have seven shooters.â
The praise from McAllen had vanished in a heartbeat, and Masters looked crestfallen. âI already said he ainât smart. Just threw that out so we consider every angle.â
McAllen spoke with finality. âOne of Markâs scenarios has it about right. Heâll ride right up into our faces. Law likes to intimidate and thump his chest.â
âHave you ever met Ben Law?â Masters asked defensively.
âWe met. Briefly. A coward,â McAllen answered. âOnly fights when heâs got a strong advantage. He relies
