Chapter 30

Tens of thousands of weary faced Earthlings in ragged, mismatched armor pieces filled the sprawling encampment that spread out in every direction as far as the eye could see from the Shiverdawn Lighthouse’ dungeon portal. Hundreds of great, roaring bonfires dotted the landscape with thousands of people congregating around them like moths to a flame. They went about their business like worker bees. Some lounged as they waited for others to finish cooking. Some gambled with mana cores using dice or playing cards. And some marched purposefully to patrol the camp while others just stared into the flames of the nearest bonfire.

To Kaito, it was less of an encampment and more of a refugee settlement, which he guessed, it technically was. These thousands of disheveled people were the last remaining refugees of Earth, a planet that no longer existed.

The thought was…sobering. Even sad.

Though not too sad since Kaito had been there. On the frontlines. Having the only important people in his life taken from him. And just like the other Earthlings present, he watched his homeworld fall apart around him. Now, these people were the only evidence that the planet ever existed in the first place.

He shook his head in a vain attempt to rid himself of these thoughts, but couldn’t stop his mind from wandering, automatically reminiscing of a world, a life, that was stolen from him.

Camouflaged by his [Spectral Razorshield (Ra)], Kaito simply strolled through the settlement, peering into the faces of those he shared a common history with. While none of them may have been his relative or even the neighbor kid down the street, they were all brothers and sisters from Mother Earth.

He spied a large section of the camp filled with mostly southeast Asians — Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Indonesian and Filipino. He was certain there were other nationalities strewn about the group, but Kaito wasn’t that invested. He, himself, was a mix of those races, though he didn’t identify with any of them.

Nearby were some southern Asians — Indians, Pakistani, Nepalese, Sri Lankans and Bangladeshi. Beside them were some middle-easterners and beside them were some Russians or maybe they were Ukrainians?

Honestly…countries, borders and races hadn’t mattered to him in a very long time. What did those seemingly arbitrary differences matter when everyone suddenly spoke the same language, could fling fireballs from their hands and were forced to fight mana-touched monsters to the death?

All around him, he only saw the similarities that they shared.

The same sunken eyes, haunted by trauma that none of them had any time to process.

The same slumped shoulders that came from years of constant battle that left a permanent weariness deep in their bones.

The same ragtag sort of armor that everyone managed to cobble together themselves, showing that they knew what it took to survive.

Here and there, he caught sight of tents that had seen better days. Those must have belonged to people who had storage abilities, either that or someone actually hauled a tent on their backs manually for the last four years.
