CHAPTER SIXTEEN

NOT A DATE

The meeting with Tianlong was set for eight o’clock, but we didn’t have to go far. Dom had arranged it on home territory, booking a private room in one of the casino’s ritzy restaurants.

We showed up early, another home court advantage.

“I’m surprised he agreed to have the meeting here, dead center of your kingdom,” I told Dom as we entered the private room. We were alone for the moment, his usual entourage outside waiting to show our guest in.

He moved so we were standing face to face. “I doubt he’s happy about it, but I didn’t give him a choice,” he said, smoothing my hair. “He can’t try any of his tricks here. I heard how your last meeting with him went.”

Oh that. I’d nearly forgotten. He’d enthralled me effortlessly, even stolen a kiss though I’d bitten his tongue hard enough to make him bleed for it. And that wasn’t even the worst of it. The weirdo had suggested that I’d be bearing his sons. “He’s a scary motherfucker,” I remarked. “What are you doing?” I asked. He was fussing with my dress.

“Helping you prepare for your date,” he said, a hint of temper in it.

“It’s not a date.”

He cupped my face with his hand, rubbing his thumb softly over my lower lip. His discordant eyes captured me. “Your formal meeting with a dragon king that wants to mate with you, then,” he returned. “Is that better?”

“Not really. You know I don’t like this any more than you do, right? I just want my sister back. Can you chill with the jealousy and think about that for a minute?”

He closed his eyes, opened them, said, “You’re right,” and started kissing me like our very lives depended on it.

We pulled back sometime later at a throat being pointedly cleared.

Tianlong had arrived, and he was just inside the room, staring back and forth between the two of us like we were being particularly offensive, and I didn’t think it was just the PDA. I recalled that he had a real issue with my choice to be with a druid instead of a dragon.

He moved forward in a blur and Dom was suddenly in front of me, blocking me from even seeing the other man.

He’d tried something, I couldn’t tell what, and Dom had beaten him to the punch.

“Tsk tsk, druid,” Tianlong said, sounding amused. “You’re a better diplomat than this. Won’t you even honor the most basic of niceties? I was simply attempting to give her a formal greeting, as is customary among our kind.”

“You won’t touch her. Find another way to be polite. Now, be seated.”

Tianlong actually did it. By sheer force of his arrogance, Dom had made the other man submit.

It was impressive, almost instructive.

Dom and I took our seats on the opposite side of the table from him.

Tianlong just studied me for a long time. It got to the point of being insulting. I stared right back.

He was a beautiful man, tall and elegant with perfect porcelain skin and long, silky black hair.
