Gabriel had been watching Jacob for several hours, but from all appearances, he was recovering. He sat up now, much more alert. Jacob took another drink from the water bottle and met Gabrielâs gaze. The sparkle had returned to his eyes. Thank God. It looks like I got the dosage right.
Before Gabriel could do anything further, Mark appeared at the door. âLetâs go. Weâre leaving.â
Gabriel worked to convince Mark it would be a bad idea to go. âJacob needs to recover.â
âJakeâs okay. Arenât you, son?â
Jacobâs voice shook. âSure, Dad. Iâm ready.â
âAtta boy.â He looked at Gabriel and ran his tongue over his lips. âLoad our shit. Youâre driving.â
Damn it! At least thereâs a chance for him to find us here when Rickâs search is focused on a cabin.
âYou know, Mark, this is a good spot. Hard to find.â
Brittle laughter came from Mark. âYou found us. Canât chance another cop doing the same. Weâre moving.â He waved his gun at Gabriel. âGet the shit in the SUV. Now!â
âOkay, okay. But where are you going next?â
âElk Mountain. A buddy stumbled across a mine opening thatâs almost impossible to find. Then Iâll figure out how to move Jake and I somewhere safeââhe studied Gabrielââand what to do with you.â
Mark helped Jacob out the door, heading away from the cabin and toward the SUV. He noticed the gun belt where heâd disarmed Gabriel. Mark scowled, picked up the belt and tossed it down the mountainside. He turned back but held his pistol on Gabriel while he gathered the camping equipment. Gabriel walked slowly, trying to come up withâsomething.
Jacob made an odd squeaking noise, and Gabriel remembered the symbol for âblond mouseâ on Jacobâs football. Gabriel smiled. The pictograms. Of course!
Gabriel stopped to adjust his boot and snagged a small but sharp piece of fractured rock and palmed it until heâd made it inside the cabin. He glanced back and realized Mark was talking with Jacob and, for the first time, wasnât watching him. Gabriel dropped to the floor, so if Mark checked on him, it would appear he was gathering their gear. With that, Gabriel focused on his plan and scratched two symbols into the log wall. He had completed the second pictogram when Mark yelled toward the cabin. âWhatâs taking so long? Get moving.â
Gabriel collected the last of their stuff then stowed it away in the back of the SUV. As he did, he noticed Jacob focused on loading rocks into the vehicle, but Gabriel made certain he didnât call attention to whatever Jacob was doing. He brushed the dust from his hands and turned to Mark. âItâs all loaded.â
Mark motioned with the gun. âGet in. Youâre driving.â
âIâll ride up front with Gabe,â said Jacob.
He called Jacob to him, but Mark glared. Gabriel dropped his hands to his sides. âYouâre welcome to ride shotgun with me.â
Gabriel eased into the driverâs side, searching for anything else he could do to leave more clues for Rick. He hoped heâd done enough. He was startled out of his thoughts when Mark scolded Jacob.
