Twenty-eight
Jablonsky dropped me off at Martin’s once we were done answering questions about the shooting. He wanted to stay, but it was more important he remain with our best bet of figuring this thing out. So I was left alone at Martin’s estate with the security system fully engaged after being given strict instructions to stay inside and away from the windows and doors. It was a miracle Mark didn’t bother to tell me not to run with scissors or use the stove, but after what just happened, I understood his concern. Shit, I was concerned, except my worry had gone from keeping myself alive to making sure no one else became collateral damage. Out of three close calls, two people had been grazed, and I was convinced if Lucca hadn’t slid over the hood of the SUV when he did, we would be three for oh.
Since arriving home, I reviewed the research but found nothing of use. Jablonsky’s words came back to me, and I couldn’t help but agree with his assessment. We’d been played. Like a magician perfecting a trick, the son of a bitch made sure we were distracted by the flyer and the website, and while our attention was diverted, whoever was behind this was getting farther and farther away.
After changing out of my clothes, wanting to burn them and the bad juju they held, I put on a t-shirt and jeans and paced the living room and kitchen. Martin wasn’t home yet, and worst case scenarios ran through my brain on a loop. It wasn’t safe for him to be near me. It wasn’t safe for him as long as I was here. The urge to run was overpowering, and I started a dozen different notes, telling him I had to go for his safety, only to scrap every single page.
Eventually, I ended up lying on the living room floor, staring at the ceiling. The alarm system beeped, indicating it had been deactivated. Footsteps sounded on the stairs, and the door opened.
“Alex,” he called, “I’m back. We need to talk about this morning.”
“Stop shouting. I’m right here.”
“What are you doing down there?”
“Hoping to gain a new perspective. You should try it. It really helps.” I turned my head in order to see him better. “Is Bruiser here?”
“Yeah, he’s doing some reps in the gym. He’ll be sticking around for a while.”
“Good. I need to talk to him later, if that’s okay with you.”
“Since when do you ask?” Martin queried, taking off his already untied tie and hanging his jacket in the closet.
“He’s your employee. That’s part of your business. I told you I wouldn’t interfere again.” Lifting myself onto my elbows, I asked, “You said you’d be back for lunch. It’s almost dinnertime. Is everything okay?”
“I had a long conversation with the Board. Any talk of suspending me from my position or of someone taking over has been squashed. I agreed to some concessions and perks in order to ensure my company remains mine.”
“You bribed them?”
“I incentivized them.
