The bald man had been dead before Emma had her vision about being chased by a man with a knife and her psychic floodgates opened. There must be a connection between Aspen’s disappearance and the dead man. “Do they know his name?”

“No identification yet.” Miguel picked up one of Jack’s toys—a brightly colored plastic rattle—and jiggled it over the baby’s grasping fingers. “They’ll get started right away on a preliminary autopsy. Once the crime lab has the bullets, we’ll know more. Our ballistics expert is primo.”

Oddly enough, his crime lab shop talk about autopsies and ballistics didn’t seem out of place while he played with the baby. “Did they find other evidence near the grave?”

“No fingerprints. The killer must have been wearing gloves.” He tickled Jack’s tummy. “They’ve got samples of the dried blood and made a cast of the boot print, which doesn’t do us much good until we have a boot to compare it to.”

“But the boot print didn’t match the dead man?”

“No. Must have been the killer. It’s a size-thirteen boot, so he’s probably a big guy. Like Bridger or Perkins. Not Del Gardo. He’s average height.”

“But still dangerous,” she said.

“When a man is holding a gun, size doesn’t matter.”

When Miguel glanced up at her, Emma lost her train of thought. As Grandma Quinn noted, he was a handsome fellow. Even after the long, strenuous day they’d had, his green eyes were sharp and alert. He didn’t look tired at all. A teasing smile played on his lips.

She sank to her knees on the floor beside him. As he spoke, she watched his mouth, not really hearing his words as he talked about Del Gardo and his secret tunnel leading from the silver mine into the house he’d built.

The room had gone quiet, except for the noises Jack made, and she realized that Miguel was looking back at her as if expecting a response. She had no idea what he’d been talking about. She cleared her throat. “Did they find evidence in the tunnels?”

“I just told you that.”

“Sorry, my mind was wandering.”

“They found clothes, trash, food, water. The preliminary theory is that Del Gardo was living in there, using the tunnels as a hideout.”

“Could it be where he hid the treasure?”

“That’s another theory,” Miguel said. “We’ll know more after the evidence is processed. Everybody at the lab is working overtime.”

“I feel guilty for pulling you away from your work.”

“No problemo. I’m exactly where I want to be.” His voice was gentle, almost musical. “I like hanging out with a crazy, beautiful chica.”

She felt a warm flush rising from her throat. “You wouldn’t rather be at the crime lab?”

“My brother is the workaholic in the family. As for me? I’m not so intense. Life is too short to spend every minute working.”

His gaze warmed her face, and she knew that she was blushing. “I agree.”

“You’re doing me a favor by getting me away from the crime lab. I haven’t had much of a social life since I moved to Kenner City.
