The bald man had been dead before Emma had her vision about being chased by a man with a knife and her psychic floodgates opened. There must be a connection between Aspenâs disappearance and the dead man. âDo they know his name?â
âNo identification yet.â Miguel picked up one of Jackâs toysâa brightly colored plastic rattleâand jiggled it over the babyâs grasping fingers. âTheyâll get started right away on a preliminary autopsy. Once the crime lab has the bullets, weâll know more. Our ballistics expert is primo.â
Oddly enough, his crime lab shop talk about autopsies and ballistics didnât seem out of place while he played with the baby. âDid they find other evidence near the grave?â
âNo fingerprints. The killer must have been wearing gloves.â He tickled Jackâs tummy. âTheyâve got samples of the dried blood and made a cast of the boot print, which doesnât do us much good until we have a boot to compare it to.â
âBut the boot print didnât match the dead man?â
âNo. Must have been the killer. Itâs a size-thirteen boot, so heâs probably a big guy. Like Bridger or Perkins. Not Del Gardo. Heâs average height.â
âBut still dangerous,â she said.
âWhen a man is holding a gun, size doesnât matter.â
When Miguel glanced up at her, Emma lost her train of thought. As Grandma Quinn noted, he was a handsome fellow. Even after the long, strenuous day theyâd had, his green eyes were sharp and alert. He didnât look tired at all. A teasing smile played on his lips.
She sank to her knees on the floor beside him. As he spoke, she watched his mouth, not really hearing his words as he talked about Del Gardo and his secret tunnel leading from the silver mine into the house heâd built.
The room had gone quiet, except for the noises Jack made, and she realized that Miguel was looking back at her as if expecting a response. She had no idea what heâd been talking about. She cleared her throat. âDid they find evidence in the tunnels?â
âI just told you that.â
âSorry, my mind was wandering.â
âThey found clothes, trash, food, water. The preliminary theory is that Del Gardo was living in there, using the tunnels as a hideout.â
âCould it be where he hid the treasure?â
âThatâs another theory,â Miguel said. âWeâll know more after the evidence is processed. Everybody at the lab is working overtime.â
âI feel guilty for pulling you away from your work.â
âNo problemo. Iâm exactly where I want to be.â His voice was gentle, almost musical. âI like hanging out with a crazy, beautiful chica.â
She felt a warm flush rising from her throat. âYou wouldnât rather be at the crime lab?â
âMy brother is the workaholic in the family. As for me? Iâm not so intense. Life is too short to spend every minute working.â
His gaze warmed her face, and she knew that she was blushing. âI agree.â
âYouâre doing me a favor by getting me away from the crime lab. I havenât had much of a social life since I moved to Kenner City.
