When the police opened Jerk-faceâs backpack, they found a pile of money â thousands of dollars. And then Olivia remembered the pills, which she had forgotten to hide in the woods, and handed them over.
The cops found the drug smugglerâs sled exactly where Olivia had said it would be. They were even able to start it with the key she provided. Then they followed the drug smugglerâs tracks downhill to where he had tried to hide in the woods. By then he was so cold that he gave up without a struggle.
While they waited to be taken into town, Olivia and Leo laid Justin out on the table with the help of an RCMP officer who had been left behind with them. With that head wound, they didnât want to move Justin far. Besides, it was easier to examine him there. Justin kept drifting into and out of consciousness. They placed a jacket under his head and a sleeping bag over him to keep him warm.
Caroline was unhurt but in shock, so they placed her under the sleeping bag with her husband.
Leo refused to let Olivia fuss over him. Instead, he removed her hat, earmuffs, mittens, gloves, neck warmer, coat and boots. Then he examined every inch of her exposed flesh for signs of frostbite. When she started shivering, he nodded grimly and pulled the sleeping bag out of his pack. He set it on the lower bunk closest to the fire and unzipped it. Then he tucked her into it and zipped it up before leaving the hut.
The pain of returning circulation in Oliviaâs hands and feet was so brutal that she actually cried. The constable pretended he didnât see.
Thank goodness Leo wasnât there to see.
The RCMP officer refilled the woodstove and kept the door open to warm up the space faster. He found the ancient kettle that had been left on the floor by the wood stove and dug through the various backpacks until he found water bottles, which he used to fill up the kettle. This he placed on the wood stove.
Leo returned moments later with Oliviaâs backpack. He pulled out her sleeping bag and opened it, standing in front of the wood stove to warm the bag. Finally, he returned to her and with the officerâs help, they lifted Olivia out of the bunk, placed the warmed sleeping bag down and tucked her into it. Then Leo placed the other sleeping bag over her.
Then he lay down next to her and wrapped his arms and legs around her. For the first time in hours, she was blissfully warm.
Just as she was drifting off to sleep, a thought wafted through her hazy brain.
She had never in her life had to work so hard to get a man into bed with her.
