Berg, Erik. "The Digital Future of Investigations." Law Enforcement Technology, (Aug. 1995). A nontechnical discussion of how the process of digitizingworks and how it is applied to such forensic sciences as fingerprinting, especially the enhancement of latent prints.
Block, Eugene. Fingerprinting: Magic Weapon against Crime. NewYork: David McKay Company, 1969. A popular but now somewhat dated look at most aspects of fingerprinting, presented largely as a series of highly readable case studies with chapter titles such as "The Question Mark Burglar," "The Mystery of the Mummy," and "Telltale Letters"; also includes a history of the science, classification basics, etc.
Federal Bureau of Investigation. The Science ofFingerprints, rev ed. Washington, D.C,: Government Printing Office, 1984. A comprehensive study of the science of fingerprinting that explains the basics of pattern recognition, classification, taking fingerprints, developing latent prints, etc.; tells how to establish a local fingerprint identification bureau.
Futrell, Ivan Ross. "Hidden Evidence: Latent Prints on Human Skin." FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, vol. 65, no. 4 (April 1996). Discusses methods of developing latent fingerprints on the skin of crime victims, especially the most successful method that uses cyanoacrylate fuming in conjunction with magnetic fingerprint powder.
Nickell, Joe. "The Two `Will Wests': A New Verdict. "Journal of Police Science and Administration, vol. 8, no. 4 (Dec. 1980). New research proving that this historic case of lookalikes-which helped promote fingerprinting-was not what it seemed. Far from being "unrelated," both Will West and Bill West were actually monozygotic (identical) twins. Evidence includes similar, inheritable traits in the men's fingerprints.
Vigo, Guillaume P., Dennis M. Hueber, and Tuan Vo-Dinh. "Evaluation of Data Treatment Techniques for Improved Analysis of Fingerprint Images."Journal of Forensic Sciences,JFSCA, vol. 40, no. 5 (Sept. 1995). A highly technical evaluation of four methods of data treatment of fingerprint images, including those to remove electronic "noise" and those that also enhance the ridge detail; illustrated.
