Figure 5.2 Timeline: the Milošević and Karadžić proceedings

Milošević at the bar

The trials of Slobodan Milošević and Radovan Karadžić were characterised by defiance and a rejection of the tribunal’s authority. Both trials consisted of a battle to introduce an alternative narrative of the past. Milošević and Karadžić’s audiences were not the judges; their principal publics were their own nationals. Both opted for self-representation, which gave them a greater political platform.14 With a background in law, Milošević was a particularly skilled orator and, benefiting from having Jacques Vergès as one of his legal advisers, was able to use the strategy of rupture to maximum effect. Symbolic gestures of defiance, including his refusal to address the Presiding Trial Chamber Judge by his title, instead choosing to call him ‘Mr May’, and refusing to stand, were visual affirmations of his rejection of the rules of the game imposed by the tribunal.15
