Transformation

Asher! Asher! Wake up! Something’s wrong!

I turned my head over into my pillow and let out a reserved scream- my bones felt like they were on fire. I felt myself getting more tired as the days passed, but this was too soon- I still had one more day of school.

My bones.

You need to go!

I can’t.

Cami. I told you, you wouldn’t have an option! You’re starting the transition and you can’t stop it. You don’t want to be in the house when that happens!

I heard the wolf in me getting louder, could feel it stretching like a dog after a long nap.

I was panicking.

Just go outside. I’ll be there soon.

What about school?

Don’t worry about it.

And... Another wave of pain coursed through me and I had a harder time keeping this one quiet. If I didn’t leave soon, I’d wake up the whole house.

Damn it! I knew I should’ve been there tonight!

It’s not your fault Dixon called another pack meeting.

I tried to stand up, but my legs buckled under me.

Asher... My voice was somewhere between a whine and panic.

I’m close. I could hear the guilt and anguish in his voice. Just come outside and start walking down the road.

I stood up from the floor after the last wave passed and guessed I had three or four minutes before the next one. It felt like my body was being ripped apart from the inside and my veins were filled with molten lava. I stumbled to the door and tried to quickly make my way downstairs, leaning heavily on the stair railing, because my legs felt weak from the pain.

I panicked when I got downstairs and saw Leo’s light on from under his door, regretting I hadn’t even bothered to check the time. I could feel my muscles tightening, preparing for the next onslaught of daggers, so I hurried across the room. I closed the screen door as gently as I could and fell to the ground less than a second later, shoving the side of my hand in my mouth to mute the screams which were boiling.

I tried to focus on anything to detract from the pain, but my eyes were flickering between normal vision and night vision, making me nauseous. Off in the distance, I heard the low hum of Asher’s car, getting closer and closer, until he raced through the fence, causing dust and rocks to fly up. Seconds later, he had swooped me up in his arms and was carrying me to his car.

I curled into a ball, pulling my knees to my chest, and closed my eyes.

“I know it hurts... just try not to think about it and focus on something else.”

I looked at him and didn’t have the energy to say anything, barely able to keep my eyes open.

I felt his hand on my leg just before another wave tore through me. I screamed out, not holding anything back this time, and it felt cathartic.

Before I closed my eyes again, I could tell we were getting on the highway.
