CHAPTER SEVEN

Theresa shouldn’t have been surprised when Jace and Layla arrived at the crêperie at nine o’clock the next morning and announced that they wanted to stay and help out for the rest of the day. In normal circumstances, she would have been happy to have them, but the fact that she knew they were there specifically because they were worried about her safety irked her. She didn’t want Jace to worry. She wanted him to go and enjoy his vacation instead of spending the day doing busywork at the crêperie.

Still, she wasn’t about to turn her own son away when he wanted to spend time with her. She set them to work and focused on making the food, enjoying the usual chit chat with her customers. None of the people on their list had come in yet, which was a relief. She didn’t want trouble at the crêperie at the best of times, but especially not with Jace and Layla there.

There was a lull after lunch, and Wynne came out of the kitchen to chat with the rest of them as the dishwashing and ingredient prep slowed down.

“So, have you heard back from the police?” she asked as she watched Theresa make an experimental crêpe. She had found a can of pumpkin purée in the cupboard at her apartment and was trying to figure out the right ratio of pumpkin, pumpkin spice flavored crème fraiche, and whipped cream to make a dessert crêpe that wasn’t overpowering or too soggy.

“I haven’t heard anything yet. I’m sure I won’t until they make an arrest.”

“I hope they do soon.” Wynne frowned. “The police haven’t released any information about the murder, beyond what was in the original statement. I don’t like not knowing anything about what happened.”

“Mom hasn’t shared her suspect list with you?” Jace asked, looking amused. “She’s quite the amateur investigator.”

Theresa sighed. “I’m not going to go sharing that around, Jace. We don’t have any evidence that any of those people were involved. I don’t want to be responsible for rumors getting out about them if they’re innocent.”

“Hold on, if you have a list of suspects, I want to see it,” Wynne said. “I won’t tell anyone, but I want to know who to look out for. The police must think it has something to do with someone who was at the crêperie, since they came here for security footage and those receipts. If it’s someone I might run into, I have a right to know.”

Theresa couldn’t argue with that—keeping her employees safe with one of her major concerns, and it was true that knowing who to look out for would help achieve that. Besides, she trusted Wynne not to go around spreading rumors if she said she wouldn’t. Sighing, she got her phone out, pulled up the list Clare had sent her—she had edited it to add in Paul Johnson’s name—and handed it over to her employee. Wynne looked through it, her brow furrowed.

“That’s why you were asking me about Paul last night.
