Chapter 24

Caspian

“There you go again, just brooding in your own head,” Coco complains, floating next to me down the hallway. I just give her a droll look and attempt to ignore her. Them telling me that Brook was possibly Unseelie didn’t feel as real as when Mercury dropped that bomb like he didn’t know what it would do. Brook walked in front of me, Auberon’s beast still by her side. If the beast cared that she was Unseelie, he didn’t show it at all. In fact, he seemed even more protective of her now.

He had continuously put his body between her and any of us three since Mercury had left. Guess we hadn’t reacted the way the beast thought we should. Kellan was right. This was a path we had already started on. Her being Unseelie didn’t change the outcome any.

“I was right, by the way.” She said with a flap of her translucent wings.

“You always think you are right,” Lance spoke up from the other side of me. “You said she was a Fade, not an Unseelie. Gerault is the only one that was right. I still say they need to be careful. If she is really Unseelie, she could be a Trojan horse sent to destroy them from within.”

With a glare, Coco faded away. Her parting words, “We’ll see.” Echoed around me. If Gerault had been right about her being an Unseelie, was he right about her being my soulmate? My shared soulmate? Lance had a point. What if she had known. What if she used the tablets to bring herself to us?

Shaking my head of the thoughts, I push them away. It wasn’t possible. Not with everything that had happened since then. I could feel myself softening to her, and I tried to build those walls back up. But they were crumbling. I wanted to let her in. I wanted her to be my soulmate. How could I betray Rissa’s memory by being with an Unseelie? She had been like a sister to me.

Lumi reached out and touched my wrist, stopping me for a moment. I looked over at him to see why he stopped me. “Are you okay?” He asked. That is the thing about Lumi, he acted like he didn’t care for anything, but he was probably the one that cared the most. He put on that act so often that sometimes I think the others just thought that was who he was.

With a nod, I looked at Brook as she moved down the hallway with the other two. “Are you okay?” I echoed the question back at him.

“It is a lot to take in.”

“It is.”
