Safety

Pedestrian crossings are the source of most collisions,49 and they can be dangerous and challenging on streets with multiple lanes, heavy traffic volumes, or high traffic speeds. In the United States, road crossings at midblock locations account for more than 70 percent of pedestrian fatalities.50 Unlike pedestrian accidents, most bicycle accidents occur at street intersections, not midblock.51 The evidence connecting bicycle infrastructure with increased ridership and perception of safety is strong.52 What is less clear in the research is whether physically separated bicycle facilities, such as cycle tracks, where cyclists have a barrier between them and traffic but periodically need to cross streets and intersections where they may be conflicts with cars, are safer or more conducive to cycling than on-road bike facilities such as bicycle lanes.53 One review of literature on transportation infrastructure and bicycle injuries and crashes found that on-road marked bike lanes consistently reduce injury rates, collision frequency, or crash rates by about 50 percent compared to unmodified roadways.54
