To feel uneasy, troubled

To be overcome with a nagging concern

To be plagued with doubts

In the biblical sense, worry means to have a sinful, willful distraction that pulls your trust away from God. (That’s troubling!)

In a personal sense it means to have an anxiety that you need to unload to God. (That’s comforting.)

As I thought about worry and some of the implications these definitions point to, I began to realize why I wasn’t supposed to worry. For instance…

Worry is a response to something that is going on in a person’s life.

Worry is a condition produced when no solution is seen.

Worry is an activity generated by what seems to be limited options.

Worry is an action that has no legitimate basis.

Worry is a condition that affects everyone.

Worry is a reaction that produces no positive results.

Worry is a sin that denies the power of God.

Worry is positive only where sin is involved.

Breaking the Worry Habit…Forever!

Just glancing back through these definitions made me realize that all of life and its challenges can cause us to worry. But for most of our problems, there are solutions that remove the need to worry and allow us to replace worry with action. One immediate solution is to realize the fact that you and I are not alone. Everyone is tempted to want to travel life’s road alone. But guess what—and you’re going to love this…!

God is always present at your side. His Son’s death has provided for your sins, and you are now His child. God is watching over you, and He will never leave you. These are sure and totally trustworthy promises. So…why worry?

I’m sure you’ll agree that worry is not beautiful and needs to be addressed, conquered, and obliterated. Because worry is an affront to God and is counterproductive to you as a person, wouldn’t you think that Christians would at least want to banish this activity out of their lives? After all, God’s care for us is constant. He Himself is the Good Shepherd who assures us we will never lack anything we truly need (Psalm 23:1). And we possess a plethora of promises from Him that He will take care of every facet of our lives.

Even then, sad to say, most Christians (and that includes me) have serious and frequent bouts of worry. There are plenty of opportunities to turn on the worry machine!

So how can a woman who wants “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding” (Philippians 4:7) break the worry habit and choose not to be anxious?

As a woman who worried big time, I suffered from a bleeding ulcer, colitis, and a nervous rash on my arms up to both elbows. Yes, I went to doctors, and yes, I took medication. Yes, there was improvement. But doctors and pills and salves couldn’t remedy my worry habit.

So I turned to God. I read my Bible and prayed for God’s help with my worry problem, Suddenly I noticed there were soooo many commands telling me not to worry! Out of the list of “do not worry” verses I grabbed onto two of them.
