Your Turn
Does your character take responsibility for the things theyâve done, or do they always deny wrongdoing?
Is there an argument in your manuscript where another character can avoid taking responsibility, leaving your protagonist holding the bag?
Desire for drama
There are people who like conflict because it makes them feel alive. Sparkly! Conflict is exciting. When things are too peaceful, too content, they feel bored. They will pick arguments or engage in conflict because it gives them a focus. They enjoy the high that comes from conflictâthe rush of brain chemicals and the feeling of engagement. As an official fan of the no-drama-llama approach to life, this drives me crazy, but there are many people who thrive on high drama. And if it doesnât happen naturally, theyâll go out of their way to create it.
Have you ever known a couple (or been in a relationship) that seems to court conflictâjust so that when the conflict is over, they will make up? People in these relationships feel more loved because the other person cares enough to have the argument. High emotions can be sexy.
Another example of a person who desires drama is a friend who swings from one disaster to another. Sheâs either in a fight with a family memberâand they are never speaking to each other againâor she and her spouse are on the verge of breakup, or her job is falling apart. And thatâs just on a Tuesday.
