Chapter Twenty-Two

Since the floor was suspect, I did my best to sleep in the chair, but it was impossible. Either my head was falling back, or my back was in an awkward position.

I finally gave up and sat up in a huff.

I was hungry, tired, and cranky. Not even the little mouse scurrying across the room lifted my spirits.

I wondered how long I’d been there.

My stomach felt so empty that I was reminded of the time I tried to do a three-day detox and ended up detoxing myself right out of a stomach lining.

I did not do well without food.

I thought of my Little Debbie snack cake again and wanted to cry.

When I heard movement at the top of the stairs, I jumped up and rushed over in time to meet Cueball before he was at the bottom of the stairs.

He threw a shirt at me, and I turned around as I eased out of my ruined shirt and slipped his over my head.

It smelled like cigarettes and beer, but at least my breasts were no longer on display.

“How long are you gonna keep me down here with no food and no place to sleep?” I asked as I turned back around. “This is inhumane, and I really should tell you that Cade is going to be supremely pissed when he finds out the conditions I was kept in.”

Cueball’s look was incredulous when he said, “It’s been maybe three hours. Jesus, you’re a piece of work. How the hell your old man puts up with you is beyond me. It’s still the same damn day as when we grabbed the Jag. I don’t think the sun’s even went down yet.”

“Oh…”

“I was coming down to say you could either stay down here for the night unchained, or I can put you in one of the rooms but I’m handcuffing you to the bed.”

A bed sounded good, but at the mention of handcuffs I shot him a look.

He looked me up and down in distain and said, “You wish. You’re a bit too geriatric for me.”

Hey.

“That’s not what you said at that bar in Copper Creek County.”

Cueball just snorted and asked, “What’s it gonna be?”

“The bed,” I replied, knowing otherwise I’d never get a wink of sleep.

“C’mon.”

I followed him up the stairs and down a hallway that had a bunch of doors on both sides. About midway down the hall, he opened one and gestured for me to go inside.

“What about food? Are you planning on feeding me dinner?” I asked as I walked past him into the small room that had a twin-size bed and a small dresser.

“Seriously, you’re hungry again?”

“Yeah.”

He muttered under his breath what sounded like, “High-maintenance bitch,” then said, “Stay here,” and closed the door behind me.

When I heard him lock it from the other side, I wondered why I’d need to be handcuffed if it was gonna be locked anyway, and decided I’d ask him when he came back. Maybe he’d grow so annoyed with me he’d just let me go.
