Chapter 12
âMerrie! Whatâs going on? You canât quit.â She was my rock at Cloven Hoof. Merrie was always there when I got busy or had to leave the village to demon hunt. I couldnât be without her.
Merrie puffed out her cheeks. âZandra is being impossible. I canât deal with her. Iâm all for giving people second chances, but Iâm not sure she deserves one.â
âWhere is she?â
âAt the club. She showed up and messed up everything.â Merrie jammed her hands on her hips. âI had to walk out, or Iâd have yelled at her.â
âLet me handle Zandra.â I started walking back to Cloven Hoof. âIâll speak to her again about her role.â
âI thought youâd already tried that.â Merrie hurried along beside me. âShe has to go, or I will.â
âDonât quit. I need you. I thought Zandra had listened to me. I sometimes forget she resents the factââ I bit my tongue. I still wasnât telling everyone about Zandra.
âThe fact what?â Merrie jabbed me in the side with a finger. âIs she someone special?â
âUm, I just donât think she likes being told what to do by me.â
âOr by anyone,â Merrie said. âShe keeps trying to take over. We have a system in the club, and itâs always worked smoothly.â
âIt has, and we do. You do an amazing job of keeping it all together. Donât worry. Iâll sort this out.â
We jogged the rest of the way to Cloven Hoof, and I raced through the doors. My heart lurched into my throat. Zandra stood in front of the bar, her hands raised. There were dozens of full bottles of alcohol floating in the air.
I grabbed Merrieâs arm so she wouldnât yell. âDonât say a word. Iâve seen what happens when Zandra gets distracted when sheâs doing a spell. Ka-boom!â
Merrie clapped a hand over her mouth, her breath heaving out of her and tears in her eyes. She loved this bar even more than I did.
I continued to watch Zandra as the bottles wobbled slowly onto the shelves. Only when they were back in a safe place did I finally release a breath.
Zandra turned, a triumphant look on her face. âI told you I could do it, Merrie. You donât need to do everything by hand. Whatâs the point of having magic if you donât use it to do boring stuff like this?â
Merrie glared at me. âYou said youâd fix this.â
âI will. Go take a break.â
Merrie glared at Zandra and then stamped into the kitchen, slamming the door behind her.
âWhatâs wrong with her? Sheâs acting like sheâs my boss,â Zandra said. âI was doing her a favor. Look, theyâre arranged by color.â
âWhich is pretty, but now some of our popular drinks are on the top shelves. You have to use a ladder to get up there. Itâs not practical. See those three bottles of red liquid at the top? We refill those at least once a week because theyâre so popular. Youâd have to keep scrabbling up the shelves to grab those.â
âOh! I didnât know that.
