Chapter 12

“Merrie! What’s going on? You can’t quit.” She was my rock at Cloven Hoof. Merrie was always there when I got busy or had to leave the village to demon hunt. I couldn’t be without her.

Merrie puffed out her cheeks. “Zandra is being impossible. I can’t deal with her. I’m all for giving people second chances, but I’m not sure she deserves one.”

“Where is she?”

“At the club. She showed up and messed up everything.” Merrie jammed her hands on her hips. “I had to walk out, or I’d have yelled at her.”

“Let me handle Zandra.” I started walking back to Cloven Hoof. “I’ll speak to her again about her role.”

“I thought you’d already tried that.” Merrie hurried along beside me. “She has to go, or I will.”

“Don’t quit. I need you. I thought Zandra had listened to me. I sometimes forget she resents the fact—” I bit my tongue. I still wasn’t telling everyone about Zandra.

“The fact what?” Merrie jabbed me in the side with a finger. “Is she someone special?”

“Um, I just don’t think she likes being told what to do by me.”

“Or by anyone,” Merrie said. “She keeps trying to take over. We have a system in the club, and it’s always worked smoothly.”

“It has, and we do. You do an amazing job of keeping it all together. Don’t worry. I’ll sort this out.”

We jogged the rest of the way to Cloven Hoof, and I raced through the doors. My heart lurched into my throat. Zandra stood in front of the bar, her hands raised. There were dozens of full bottles of alcohol floating in the air.

I grabbed Merrie’s arm so she wouldn’t yell. “Don’t say a word. I’ve seen what happens when Zandra gets distracted when she’s doing a spell. Ka-boom!”

Merrie clapped a hand over her mouth, her breath heaving out of her and tears in her eyes. She loved this bar even more than I did.

I continued to watch Zandra as the bottles wobbled slowly onto the shelves. Only when they were back in a safe place did I finally release a breath.

Zandra turned, a triumphant look on her face. “I told you I could do it, Merrie. You don’t need to do everything by hand. What’s the point of having magic if you don’t use it to do boring stuff like this?”

Merrie glared at me. “You said you’d fix this.”

“I will. Go take a break.”

Merrie glared at Zandra and then stamped into the kitchen, slamming the door behind her.

“What’s wrong with her? She’s acting like she’s my boss,” Zandra said. “I was doing her a favor. Look, they’re arranged by color.”

“Which is pretty, but now some of our popular drinks are on the top shelves. You have to use a ladder to get up there. It’s not practical. See those three bottles of red liquid at the top? We refill those at least once a week because they’re so popular. You’d have to keep scrabbling up the shelves to grab those.”

“Oh! I didn’t know that.
