THE ROOM IS DIM AS I enter. Even though the lighting is regulated, Emma has lowered it to its lowest setting. She ignores my entrance and continues to read on her viewing device. The light from the screen gives her a pasty glow.

I sigh as I sit down on the bed. Reaching out, I smooth her dark locks back from her head. She flinches, but only slightly.

“I am so sorry,” I say. Somehow, I have to get through to her. I need to buy us enough time in order to find out more about the others on board the Leonida. “I wish that I could openly fight for you, that I could battle the very system that has enslaved you, but I am the only one against many at the moment. However, I think there might be others who are less than happy with the breeding program. Once I find out who they are, we stand a much better chance of being together more permanently. I mean, that is, if you’ll still have me.”

I am glad that she has allowed me to speak out, that she hasn’t interrupted me or told me to leave her alone. Her breathing has stilled even though, outwardly, she still appears to be reading. It gives me hope, so I continue to speak.

“I have spoken to someone else, someone that I trust, and they believe that I am not alone in my distrust of the Union’s breeding program. He thinks that we might stand a chance if we can all band together. Even still, if that is not the case, I am willing to fight for you. I want to make that clear. I may have not revealed everything to you at the start but I will from now on. Regardless of how hard it is to say it, no matter how much it might hurt you to know. You have had so much taken away from you and, even though I wanted to protect you, I realize now that honesty is the only way for us to stand a chance.”

Finally, Emma turns toward me and I am gifted with a view of her perfect face. Her irises, normally pale blue seem even more frigid through the wetness of her tears.

They peer into my soul, devastate me with their disdain. Still, I swallow back my fear and acknowledge just how much I have hurt her. No matter what, I must do better. I must be better in order to keep this beautiful prize in front of me.

“Truly, I understand your anger,” I continue. “I wish that somehow I could change how we first met, that I could be upfront with you from the very start. I never wanted to hurt you. Yet, by protecting you from the truly harsh reality of my kind, I hurt you even more.”

Reaching out, I touch her. My body is always desperate for her. To not feel her skin under my fingertips is pure torture. Emma allows the touch and I imagine that her gaze softens slightly.
