Chapter Eight

It’s good to know that we haven’t lost our touch.

Leo was referring to our amateur sleuthing capabilities, but I wasn’t so sure that we’d actually solved the current murder mystery. Just because Chef Marcel and Ashley Anders had been having an affair didn’t mean that she’d murdered him.

The case is all but closed, Raven. We delivered the cranberry culprit right into the hands of the good ol’ sheriff. I might have gotten caught by a handmade security system, but the end result is that we overcame defeat. This bodes well for the squirrelpocalypse. As a matter of fact, I do believe that we’ve earned ourselves a free afternoon nap.

“If Sigmond were standing in front of me right now, I would murder him all over again,” Summer lamented through a sob. She used a tissue to wipe the smeared mascara underneath her eyes, but she only managed to make it worse. “How could he do this to me? And with her, no less! He was constantly going on and on about how she couldn’t cook. Oh, he had me going, didn’t he?”

Leo and I were currently sitting at the dining room table of the inn. Liam had already escorted Ashley to the police station. Unfortunately, Summer and Emily had been downstairs speaking to Gertie about securing an additional room as the two had exited through the front entrance. Summer and Emily had overheard part of the conversation between Liam and Ashley, and now Emily had been left to console a very betrayed grieving fiancé.

Summer’s distraught state was evident. Her makeup was a mess, and she’d been through quite an emotional rollercoaster this morning. Emily had somehow finally managed to get Summer out of her winter coat. As for Felicity, she’d descended from the second level upon hearing the hysterical cries that no doubt had echoed throughout the hallways. The only one not in the know about the latest development was Greg Bouvet.

“Gertie, I’m going to walk back to the teashop,” I murmured with a gentle pat to the older woman’s arm. “I’ll bring back some of the pumpkin spiced teabags.”

“That would be wonderful, dear,” Gertie said as she rested her warm hand over mine. “I think our guests could use another round of tea. I feel for poor Summer. She’s been through so much today, but I don’t have another room. Emily is going to share hers, bless her heart. Alison is upstairs right now setting up a cot for her.”

I could only imagine the complaints that Gertie and Alison would receive from Summer Paisley, but it wasn’t as if she was being forced to stay at the inn. Liam had even suggested that she drive a town over to stay at the hotel that overlooked the water.

It’s not working, Raven. I know what you’re doing. You think if you plant seeds of doubt in my catnip-addled brain that I’ll start second-guessing the cranberry culprit’s guilt. Well, it’s not going to work. You know what the blueberry antioxidants do for my brain cells.
