âItâs time for you to leave this motel,â Norman said, struggling to keep his voice calm though every fiber of his being wanted to yell at this man.
âCalm down, man.â
âIâll refund your stay,â he continued. âEven for last night. But I wonât let you stay on this property one moment longer.â
âThis isnât what you think it is,â Dex said. His heavy camera still sat on his shoulder and Norman wondered if Dex was filming even as they spoke. But right now he didnât care. He needed Dex and his film crew to leave before any more negative videos came out about his business.
âI know you planted evidence on your last film,â Norman announced. âMy son looked up your production company. You planted evidence to get better ratings. And now youâre here staging scenes.â
âWeâll go to the press,â Olivia said, heated as she stepped closer to Dex. âAnd the police if we have to. This is libel.â
âI promise you itâs not like that,â Dex said. He handed off his camera to one of his guys and Norman breathed a sigh of relief. At least they werenât being filmed as they confronted Dex and his production company.
âIâm sure the Boston Globe would be interested to hear your company is still out there lying,â Norman threatened. âThey were the ones who broke the story the first time, werenât they?â
âThey never understood what we were doing,â Dex said. His voice was calm and controlled, not at all the fear of someone getting caught in a lie. âWe never claimed to be a real documentary crew. Thatâs not who we are. Weâre working on something innovative. Itâs a new genre of cinema.â
âDex, these people are getting antsy.â
One of Dexâs crew nodded toward the two-dozen people who were starting to lay their signs on the ground and take seats on the curb.
âGet a few more takes,â Dex said. He pointed toward the guy with the camera and nodded for them to take his spot. Then Dex walked Olivia and Norman a few feet away, where they could talk further.
âI want you to leave,â Norman said again. âSend these people home right now and pack up your things.â
âLet me explain what Iâm doing,â he pleaded. âWeâre shining a light on the irony of documentaries. Weâre trying to show people how quickly innocent people get accused of horrible crimes. Innocent people like the two of you.â
This stopped Norman, who glanced over at Olivia. Dexâs videos had announced Norman and Olivia as the prime suspects in the murder, but now Dex was calling them innocent. What was this man up to?
âYou can watch my footage,â Dex offered. âIâll show you what weâre actually working on. If you still donât like it, weâll pack up and leave. I promise.â
âHeâs just trying to get more time,â Olivia said. âYou just want to get your filming done, so youâre trying to distract us.â
âCome see what weâre putting together,â he said again. âThis isnât what you think.â
Norman was torn. On one hand, he agreed with Olivia.
