The four were a half hour away from town when Sydneyâs phone rang. Marianne answered it for her.
âItâs Olivia Schwimmer, Marianne. I need to talk to Sydney.â She spoke quickly, sounded desperate.
âShe canât come to the phone right now. Sheâs driving. Can you tell me whatâs on your mind?â
âYou have to come to my house immediately. All four of you, if youâre together.â
âOkay? Whatâs up?â
âSheriff Formero is here. Iâm his chief suspect. Maybe his only suspect, for all I know.â
âOkay, Olivia. Take a breath. All four of us are in the car. Iâm going to put you on speaker, so we can all hear about whatâs happening.â She played with Sydneyâs phone and switched the audio so it came through the vehicleâs speaker system. âOkay, go ahead.â
âI have to make this quick. I said I had to go to the bathroom, but that was so I could call and warn you. Heâs been going through all the files and records and what-not he claimed as evidence and found my diary. I havenât entered anything in weeks and must have forgotten it was even there.â
The carâs occupants exchanged looks. Why hadnât Olivia told them about the diary? âGo on,â Sydney said.
âThere were a few entries about my suspicions that Paul was being unfaithful. I wrote things when I was angry, like I wanted him dead. But I didnât mean it.â
âDid you call your attorney? You shouldnât have to answer anything without your attorney present,â Micki counseled.
âI, uh, no, not yet.â
Three sets of eyes rolled. How could she expect them to get her off the hook when she did dumb things like this? âGo out there now and tell him you wonât be answering any further questions until your attorney gets there.â Sydney attempted to keep her voice even and not let her anger seep through.
Olivia hung up only to call again a minute later. âThe sheriff wants to speak to you,â she said, her tone terse.
âI want to talk to the four of you, so drop whatever youâre doing and head to the Schwimmer house.â His voice was flat, authoritative in a way that would brook no refusal.
Once more, they exchanged looks. This time, their expressions held panic.
Sydney attempted to keep her fear out of her voice. âUh, Sheriff, as much as weâd like to accommodate your request, we are currently out of town. We went to Naples to shop.â
âWhen will you be back?â
âUh, hard to say. Weâre on our way home but hard to predict interstate traffic.â
âWhere are you now?â
He wasnât about to let them off the hook, and Sydney didnât make it a practice to lie to the authorities. She named the town theyâd just passed.
âIn other words, about thirty minutes away. Come straight here when you reach town.â He hung up.
Sydney gripped the steering wheel tighter. âFormero wouldnât want to see us unless he knows about our involvement. Olivia must have told him.â
âThe reality of actually being suspected of her husbandâs death must have hit her so hard, she told him there were others with more reason to kill him than her,â Kat surmised.
