The four were a half hour away from town when Sydney’s phone rang. Marianne answered it for her.

“It’s Olivia Schwimmer, Marianne. I need to talk to Sydney.” She spoke quickly, sounded desperate.

“She can’t come to the phone right now. She’s driving. Can you tell me what’s on your mind?”

“You have to come to my house immediately. All four of you, if you’re together.”

“Okay? What’s up?”

“Sheriff Formero is here. I’m his chief suspect. Maybe his only suspect, for all I know.”

“Okay, Olivia. Take a breath. All four of us are in the car. I’m going to put you on speaker, so we can all hear about what’s happening.” She played with Sydney’s phone and switched the audio so it came through the vehicle’s speaker system. “Okay, go ahead.”

“I have to make this quick. I said I had to go to the bathroom, but that was so I could call and warn you. He’s been going through all the files and records and what-not he claimed as evidence and found my diary. I haven’t entered anything in weeks and must have forgotten it was even there.”

The car’s occupants exchanged looks. Why hadn’t Olivia told them about the diary? “Go on,” Sydney said.

“There were a few entries about my suspicions that Paul was being unfaithful. I wrote things when I was angry, like I wanted him dead. But I didn’t mean it.”

“Did you call your attorney? You shouldn’t have to answer anything without your attorney present,” Micki counseled.

“I, uh, no, not yet.”

Three sets of eyes rolled. How could she expect them to get her off the hook when she did dumb things like this? “Go out there now and tell him you won’t be answering any further questions until your attorney gets there.” Sydney attempted to keep her voice even and not let her anger seep through.

Olivia hung up only to call again a minute later. “The sheriff wants to speak to you,” she said, her tone terse.

“I want to talk to the four of you, so drop whatever you’re doing and head to the Schwimmer house.” His voice was flat, authoritative in a way that would brook no refusal.

Once more, they exchanged looks. This time, their expressions held panic.

Sydney attempted to keep her fear out of her voice. “Uh, Sheriff, as much as we’d like to accommodate your request, we are currently out of town. We went to Naples to shop.”

“When will you be back?”

“Uh, hard to say. We’re on our way home but hard to predict interstate traffic.”

“Where are you now?”

He wasn’t about to let them off the hook, and Sydney didn’t make it a practice to lie to the authorities. She named the town they’d just passed.

“In other words, about thirty minutes away. Come straight here when you reach town.” He hung up.

Sydney gripped the steering wheel tighter. “Formero wouldn’t want to see us unless he knows about our involvement. Olivia must have told him.”

“The reality of actually being suspected of her husband’s death must have hit her so hard, she told him there were others with more reason to kill him than her,” Kat surmised.
