Immigrants
Between 1900 and 1915, America experienced its largest ever influx of immigrants. More than 15 million people, mostly from southern and eastern Europe, moved to the United States. This number was almost equal to the number of immigrants who had come to the United States in the previous 40 years. These people came for many reasons including political unrest in their home countries, the search for religious freedom, or economic opportunity and a chance at the “American Dream.” These new immigrants settled mostly in cities and dramatically changed the social, cultural, and economic landscape of the areas in which they lived. Many of these new citizens came from non-English-speaking countries and struggled to assimilate to American culture. The United States also had difficulty absorbing these new immigrants. Cities became over crowded as growing numbers of job-seekers moved in, looking for work in factories and other industries. City services were often unable to keep up with the demands of a growing population; reformers from the middle and upper class hoped to help improve the situation. One such reformer, Jane Addams, was part of the Settlement House movement, which created houses in poor urban areas where middle and upper class volunteers would live and provide services to the local community such as daycare, education, healthcare, and food.
