CAPACITORS IN CIRCUITS

In Chapter 6, you learned about capacitors from the perspective of the electric field they store. Capacitors are frequently used as elements in circuits. They are devices that store charges when a potential difference, which you now know is a voltage, is applied to them.

CAPACITORS IN STEADY STATE

In Chapter 6, we began looking at capacitors by assuming that the two conducting plates stored charges +Q and −Q. When capacitors are used as circuit elements, this assumption is not true all of the time. A typical capacitor in a circuit will be in one of three states:

Complete uncharged, so that the charge on each plate is 0 C and the capacitor acts like a closed switch with zero resistance to charge.
