âWhat the hell happened?â Wolf was waiting when Bruf walked in the door of the clubhouse. All he saw of Coyote was the back of his vest as he disappeared into the office and slammed the door behind him. The club had gone silent and everyone was staring at Brufâs face.
âRan into a little trouble in Arizona,â he said, trying to step around Wolf. Wolf stepped into his path, however, and Bruf wasnât getting around his friend without a fight. Heâd already taken a beating from Coyoteâ¦without throwing a punch in return. He wasnât up for a fight with the manâs son, and his best friend.
âWhat kind of trouble?â
âNothing,â Bruf said. âI hit on some chick in a bar and her boyfriend didnât like it.â
âSo, whatâs the old man so pissed off about? What happened in Boston?â
âYouâll have to ask him that,â Bruf said. No way was he going to bear that news, or encourage Coyoteâs wrath again, if he could help it. The old man had one hell of a right hook. At first, Bruf thought he might have broken his jaw. It was starting to loosen up a little now, though, and he could move it. But it hurt like a son of a bitch.
âWhy did he take you with him?â Wolf asked.
âIâve got a fucking pounding headache, man. Itâs like two fucking a.m. Can we talk about this after I get a few hoursâ sleep?â
âJust answer that one question. Why did he take you? I wanted to go, and he told me no in no uncertain terms and sent me off with Manson on some bullshit assignment. Why the fuck did he take you? Youâre not even patched in yet.â
âI begged him to let me go. Wolf, he didnât take you because he didnât want to make you a part of what may have happened in Boston. Iâm not going to tell you what itâs Coyoteâs place to tell youâ¦but I will tell you this, Dax Marshall was not happy when we left, and Coyote was right to worry that whoever walked onto that ranch might not walk off.â Wolf looked toward the office door and Bruf put his hand on his friendâs shoulder and said, âHeâs had a fucked-up twenty-four hours. Heâll call church in the morning. Iâm not going to tell you what to do with your own old man, but I will tell you that heâs in the worst mood Iâve ever seen him in, so you might want to give it a few hoursâ¦let him get a few drinks in him at least.â
Wolf nodded, but his brown eyes were smoldering. Bruf knew he was hurt that Coyote took him and not his son to Boston with him, and Bruf didnât blame him. But he knew Coyote did it out of love and he respected that. It was something he didnât have, someone that cared enough about him to worry about his well-being.
âSo, what happened with the White Owls?â
âBunch of bitch-ass cowards,â Wolf said. âAs soon as they saw us, they cut around the other way.
