Chapter Twelve

Channa

Even a few days later, I couldn’t believe what had happened. I could have left it at the hug, or when he’d kissed my cheek. But no, of course it couldn’t work out like that. I had to be an idiot and think that he thought friends could kiss cheeks, then I’d be the best damn friend and do it back. I just about swallowed my tongue, along with my heart, when our mouths touched. Though, Cody didn’t seem to think I made things worse when I wiped it off like an idiot. In fact, he laughed and left all good-natured like, while I beat myself up for the rest of the night and didn’t get a minute of sleep.

“I think he’ll be in today,” Denise said.

Spinning to her, I demanded, “What? Who? No. I don’t think so. He’s busy.”

She paused putting donuts into the display case from the tray she held. “Who are you talking about?” She grinned. “Whoever it is, sounds juicy. Spill.”

I snorted. “No one. I’m not talking about anyone.”

Stanley walked through the doors from the back. “Are we talking about Coyote? She’s got a big old crush on him.”

“Stanley!” I snapped and quickly glanced around to the few customers sitting at our few tables. Thankfully, they weren’t paying us attention.

Stanley rolled his eyes. “It’s pretty obvious.” He handed off the tray of cookies to Denise and took the empty one she had.

“Oooh, please tell, Channa. I’d thought the first day you saw him you acted weird when you hid. Is there some past we don’t know about?”

“Well—”

“They knew each other in high school,” Stanley supplied.

Sighing, I glared at Stanley as he made his way into the back with a smirk. “It was more like I knew of him, and one day he saved me from a bullying situation,” I explained as I put on some gloves to prepare the rolls for the lunch crowd who would come in within an hour. “I left school and moved out of town, so we hadn’t seen each other since. Until that day in here.”

“When you hid.”

“Yes, when I hid. I knew he wouldn’t know me, but I didn’t want to risk it. That scene in high school cemented itself deep inside me, and I couldn’t get over the humiliation.”

Denise walked closer. “And now what’s going on with you two?”

“We’re friends. Well, becoming friends after everything that’s happened.”

She smiled. “And you like him?”

“As a friend, yes.”

“But Stanley said—”

“Stanley is seeing things that aren’t there. Anyway, who were you talking about earlier?”

“Bryson. He hasn’t been in for a few days. I have a feeling it’ll change today.”

Well, bugger. I hadn’t even noticed, and now I felt guilty for it. Then again, my mind had been consumed by work and Cody.

“Yeah, maybe,” I said with a shrug. “Here, let me take that tray out the back and I’ll grab some more pies.”

“No problem.” She smiled.

Was I supposed to text Bryson in the last few days to make sure he was okay?
